stratostar250 919 #1 Posted March 22, 2018 Hey all! So, I got a Work Horse GT-1100 this past year, and she's relatively clean, but the motor smoked like a chimney. I also had a charger 12 that needed some love, so I decided to use its parts towards other projects. I am taking the k301 that was on the Charger and putting it on the GT-1100. I'm going to have to do some wiring, add a choke cable, re route the exhaust, and the main hurdle right now, is the charger was a hydro, and I need the drive pulley for an 8 speed, the Briggs is a 1" shaft motor so I couldnt steal the pulley from that. Toro wants $102, which is absolutley obnoxious. If anybody knows the pulley dimensions, or locally would like to sell me one cheap, it would be highly appreciated! Here's it mocked up in place! I'm not sure whether I want to paint the motor black or keep it red. 9
squonk 41,643 #2 Posted March 22, 2018 II'd paint it red to match the decals.
midpack 911 #3 Posted March 22, 2018 I used a Hydro motor in an 8 speed tractor without changing the pulley (didn't know it mattered at the time). it's a little faster (ground speed) but it's not that bad. Still goes plenty slow in low range
953 nut 56,164 #4 Posted March 22, 2018 W.W.Graiger should have a pulley the same size as yours with 1 1/8" ID.
Mike'sHorseBarn 3,036 #5 Posted March 22, 2018 There's a few pulleys on Ebay. Some cheap some not so cheap, but you know how Ebay is. I'd paint that engine Black, love those series of tractors. My grandparents bought one brand new back in they day, and they never used anything other than Wheel Horse. Probably explains why I love Wheel Horse so much lol Here is a pic of my grandma on it for it's first mowing. 9
Bert 760 #6 Posted March 22, 2018 I did a similar swap with a 16 hp Kohler and recommend a muffler like this. I bought it from one of our venders.

I'll keep an eye out for one of those mufflers, I was thinking this or throwing a stack on it, we'll see what happens!
Achto 27,912 #8 Posted March 22, 2018 Check this site for a pulley https://www.surpluscenter.com/shop.axd/Search?keywords=1+1%2F8"+id+pulley They have a good selection of cast pulleys at decent prices.
ericj 1,578 #9 Posted March 22, 2018 if you want to use the pto you will more then likely need a factory pulley to mount the pto to. You may also need a different belt guard, not sure about the briggs powered tractors but I know that there is a difference between the Kohler singles and the onan twins eric j 1
ebinmaine 68,874 #10 Posted March 22, 2018 Just chiming in to follow along. I'd lean towards repainting to match the red decals as well.

stratostar250 919 #12 Posted March 23, 2018 (edited) Getting closer!! I just put an elbow on the exhaust for now. Just gotta figure out how to get her to charge, although she didn't charge when she was in the charger(lol, irony) either. Gotta check the voltage regulator and the stator, and I gotta see if everything should work with the briggs wiring, I dont really see many differences, though. stratostar250 919 #13 Posted March 24, 2018 I set this up this morning. Now I'm just waiting on the pulley to arrive!! I've also come to the conclusion that I need a voltage regulator. Where do you guys get yours from? Toro wants $102 (same price as the pulley, figure that) for one as well.

Amazon has them for $30, I have a few used ones. What's the part number on stack?

ebinmaine 68,874 #17 Posted March 24, 2018 Tom, there's a company called DB electrical that I got one from. $25 or so with shipping. States it fits JD with Kohler. Numbers cross back ok. I put one in my B80. Works fine. stratostar250 919 #18 Posted April 3, 2018 (edited) Well guys, except for some PTO parts, headlights, and cleaning up the wires, She's all complete! I ended up having to get a new voltage regulator and a new key switch, because the briggs uses a magneto style key switch. So now shes charges, drives, starts, stops, will do everything currently, except mow. haha. The motor burns a little bit more oil than I remember, sadly, but she runs, and she runs strong, so I'm as happy as I can be. I haven't had the motor running in 2 years either, so who knows. It's the first tractor I've swapped motors on, though, and I'm glad how it turned out! Keep 'em Alive!! Edited April 3, 2018 by stratostar250 7

stratostar250 919 #21 Posted April 11, 2018 Well, I got all the PTO parts, cleaned up the wiring, threw a deck on her, and now she's prepped for spring!! Maybe some paint at a later date, but she's ready to work!! 1
