My 520H blow out a valve seat.  Any suggestions on a new motor or should I have the seat repaired?

Repair it if possible , not a lot of choices out there for other engines that will last long.

Thanks Sarge - that was my dad's nickname.

I'm looking into have the seat fixed.  Just wondering what other solutions might be out there.

Think I also want to replace the lifters while in there as they kept losing adjustment.

If the lifters are rough where they contact the cam, the cam is bad as well.  If the adjustment threads are loose that would require replacement.  Perhaps the adjustment issue was due to loose or worn seats.

So now my problem is that the engine shop says the opposing cylinders will not fit on his table for him to work on the valve seat.

Any suggestions?

Any rebuilt used 520H's out there?

Find another engine shop. He's probably using a Serdi machine that has to have the head (in this case the whole block, chichis the problem) bolted into the fixture.. but most reputable places should have hand held equipment that can grind those seats. It's not really a big deal, unless you're stuck using certain pieces of equipment, like that guy ^^^.

The seat fell out of the head.  It has to be pressed back in.  Likely going to need an oversize seat.

Any machine shop with a turret (Bridgeport) type of a mill, can rotate the head to a horizontal position and do the boring with the block laid down.  It would take a lot more setup time and that would add to the cost, but it can be done.  Other automotive machine shops might have specialty machines that will accommodate the block. The block needs bored for the oversize seat and, depending on the blank, the seat ID needs bored to the original size.  Normal valve grinding equipment can then be used to shape the seating area.  Way oversize seats are available here: https://www.onanparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_6&products_id=14  I had to make an exception for their outdated security certificate.  These seats may need turned on a lathe as well, and might be regarded as simply raw material.  Automotive machine shops might be able to get a seat that will work as well.  The stock Onan seats may not be oversize enough to do the repair.  Be sure to have plenty of press fit on the seats, without looking it up, I believe it is around .005"

Thanks.  I spoke with the engine shop and he is willing to try if I strip the motor down to a bare block.  So it looks like she will be getting new rings as well.

Ok so the valve seat in the block was damaged and had to be machined.  The seat has been repaired.  Now I need to rebuild the motor.  Can someone help me locate rings, cam bearings and crank bearings and a full gasket set.???

Onanparts.com. No wonder people say rebuilding these takes ur first born. If that’s the case I’ll prolly put the 16 horse twin from the g/f’s tractor on it...

Wait, looked at wrong one lol. Something I looked at was $1200, but gasket set was $130 I think. Still pricey, last 454 I built were cheaper.

He's talking about just the gaskets.

      Very Solid tractor!

Newer Agro Tires on Rear and Solid Front Turf Tires. Wheel Weights on rear. Fully Swapped Forward Swept axle off of 520h. I ran my 60" Deck on this tractor for over a year with no issues.
Deck it solid top to bottom with no rot and newer blades. Belt and Pulley are good to go!
She's just a little dusty and needs a cleaning. Can get a nice Seat a Tractor Supply.

I have a 1996 520H Wheel Horse for sale.  The tractor has just over 800 hours on it.  It comes with a 48 inch deck.  The deck is a 1995 and has over 1,500 hours on it, as it came brand new with my 312-8 that I sold several years ago.  This 520-H has the swept front axle so it can handle a 60 inch deck.  I just replaced the battery and the deck belt this summer.  The engine is a 20HP Onan and it starts right up but requires the full choke.  The transmission is an Eaton 1100-062, hydrostatic.  The deck is in rough shape but the spindles appear to be in good working order.  The right rear tire has some cracking.  The original operator's manual for the 520H is included, as is the original operating and maintenance instructions for the deck, plus the installation instructions for the deck.  Also included is a new PTO belt and several miscellaneous deck wheels and rollers.  Additional pictures available upon request.  Asking $500.

Selling my trusty WH520H.  ~880 hours (currently used for moving snow when needed so hours may rise) very solid machine, strong and hardworking.  20HP Onan, hydro transmission and hydraulic lift.  Has Matt's foot-pedal conversion for forward/reverse.  Included in the sale is a tall-chute snow blower and 60" mowing deck.  The blower is in excellent condition and is on the tractor currently.  The mowing deck has been a workhorse over the years.  No holes but could use some TLC, probably needs new spindles at some point and could use a couple spots touched up with welder also does NOT have any pulley covers/protectors (see photo).  Tractor has been an incredible tool, very solid and dependable and I'm certainly going to miss her when she's gone.

Recent maintenance: replaced the plugs this summer, fluids as needed (hydro has about 100 hours on fluid/filter; oil was done in the spring and has about 25 hours on it).  Battery is about 3 years old as are the tires, Terra Trac tires on the rear and turfs on the front.  The seat (with arm rests) isn't in great shape.  I've got a cover for the seat, never used.  It's never really bothered me but new seat cover is included in sale as are 4 hub caps, chains for the rear tires, and some misc spare parts (see photos).

I've owed this machine about 8 year and put ~350 hours on her.  She's not a show piece but could be restored.  Sheet metal is generally in shape, no rust however the hood does have a couple dings in it.

I'm only selling because I'm trying to help my son get a small lawn care business started and looking to move to a zero-turn.  The 60" deck is too large for our trailer, the mowing deck lacks pulley safety shields, and we'd like something that mows faster.  My only complaint with this machine is the top-speed (which isn't great when comparing to today's machines) otherwise she's a beast.  They don't make them like this anymore.
