754

So i actually acquired this 754 back in September. I have done quite a bit of research and I know there was only 421 produced in 1964. (753 kohler/854 frame). My question is if i go by the serial number, is there a way to tell exactly the date of when it was made? I did some looking in the forums on here but i didn't see anything or I might not be looking good enough. Either way thanks for the help in advance. I guess a serial number would help. The number is 48265. :)

:text-coolphotos:     Interesting, I've always heard the production numbers don't exist. Where did you come up with the numbers?

:text-coolphotos: I am picking up a 754 soon, I posted a thread about it a while back. Wish I new more about them but at the moment I don’t still doing some research. Once I get the tractor I will have to compare the serial number to yours.

Maybe @CasualObserver could shed some light on this.  Also I would clean up the paint on that serial tag and don't destroy it, cause without that you just have an 854 with a 7hp motor on it.

I do know this much about them. All the ones I have looked at including several at the big show all the serial numbers begin with 48

If you scroll down the file page here...

you'll see all the 754 serial #'s Garry has documented to date.

Notice...your # has already made the list.  :confusion-shrug:

That's a common misconception due to bad math.

Most don't... but many years ago there were a few of the limited production models that were counted in the old handwritten production ledgers. The 754 was one of them.

The true number is 48337 - 47916 +1 = 421+1 = 422

And for those who might question the math, if you start with a serial  ----6 and you end with serial ----7 .... you don't end up with a quantity of --1. If you do, you either didn't count  ----6 or ----7.  Or think about it more simply. Serial number 1 and 2.  I have two tractors.... but if I take 2-1 that says I only have 1 tractor.  There has to be an addback of +1 for subtracting within the starting and ending range numbers.

48337 - 47916 +1 = 421+1 = 422

I have in the past been lucky enough to have seen the hand written ledgers at Toro and allowed to take some notes.  The 754s did begin at 47916 and end at 48337. Production started May 26, 1964 and ended on June 11, 1964. They are one of the very few models that had a straight run of serial numbers. For the majority of production a variety of tractors came down the line in batches making serial numbers jump across models.

I finally added one of these rare birds to my collection. Not my first choice as this one was restored prior to my purchase. The number I have on the tag shows #47974.

In my opinion, that body style round hood is one of the finest looking.  Maybe just because it was my first, but I prefer the steering shaft through the tank, instead of the hood surrounding the steering shaft.
