Joshn569 273 #1 Posted February 2, 2018 Picked this beast up today. Its a '68 in decent shape. Needs a bit of work. Motor supposivly ran last summer. It does turn over. There was a lot of water in the gearbox. Going to change all the oils, clean the fuel system put a fresh plug in and a good battery and see what happens. Choke seems to be frozen, a carb rebuild probably wouldnt hurt. I have a '78 c81, are the mower decks interchangable by any chance? 11
rjg854 11,574 #2 Posted February 2, 2018 you should be able to find the help you may need, here. While you're showing this tractor some much need TLC, you might want to check the head gasket and the axle seals.

Mike'sHorseBarn 3,036 #4 Posted February 2, 2018 I like that creative way of keeping the carb linkage connected to the governor arm.
Achto 27,913 #5 Posted February 2, 2018 (edited) Nice looking tractor!! It looks like some one may have done an engine swap or it is an early production '68. I'm saying this because of the starter/gen. The Raider normally has a Bendix starter. If you could, post a pic of the serial number plate. It's located under the dash panel. (Never mind, looks like this was covered in your earlier post) Like mentioned above it looks like you should address some of the seals for sure. If the tranny was full of water it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull it apart & check the bearings. I have a '68 Raider in process right now. hm12460 53 #6 Posted February 2, 2018 Looks like a fun project.
Joshn569 273 #7 Posted February 2, 2018 Shifter boot is completly ripped. Lots of water was in there. There is some shines of metal in the oil. Going to flush it and see what happens. All that water in there freezing up probably blew the seals out.
Joshn569 273 #8 Posted February 2, 2018 I did get it running and driving today. Im going to drop the oil again and see how it looks. It did let out a few backfire pops. Probably going to pull head and carb off. It does run tho and i think she is worth the time and money. What should the compression be at? Took some videos of it also 8 hours ago, Achto said: Nice looking tractor!! It looks like some one may have done an engine swap or it is an early production '68. Do you have a thread i can follow the progress on? Looks like fun👍
rjg854 11,574 #9 Posted February 2, 2018 Sweet, well worth going through and making sure everything is up to snuff. You've going to end up with a real decent tractor. I didn't see any smoke coming from the engine, that's a very huge positive!

Haven't gotten very far yet, I need some above 30degree days so I can do some painting. Hard to heat and ventilate the shop when it gets below 30. Here's a link to my posts. Thanks for your interest. 3 hours ago, Joshn569 said: What should the compression be at? It is hard to take a compression test on the Kohler K models as they have an auto decompression release for easier starting. Basically if it's not smoking or using oil, I'd run it. Im not familiar with how that unit works. I didnt check to see if it was charging before hand and i wish i did. 4
953 nut 56,165 #12 Posted February 4, 2018 Here is some good information on S/G units. There are lots of threads on here about steering wheel removal, good luck. Starter Generator Assembly Trouble shooting.docx 1
rjg854 11,574 #13 Posted February 4, 2018 That's a real good start, getting it torn down let the fun begin
Joshn569 273 #14 Posted February 5, 2018 Made some more progress tonight. Lots of metal in the gear box oil so i prep it and got her ready to split cases open. Found a small crack on the underside. Hope its a casting mark and not damage from ice freezing up inside. Time will tell.
Sarge 3,464 #15 Posted February 5, 2018 Looks like a typical sand casting line - hopefully. Sarge
Achto 27,913 #16 Posted February 6, 2018 It looks like a casting mark to me also. Look like you dove in head first. Enjoy your project. If you find that you need to rebuild the tranny, here is a link for a good source for rebuild kits https://www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/transmissions.html#!/Base-Kit-4/p/85721186/category=23548039 He also has kits that include the #1533 & #7207 bearing if you need to go that far. Check out the @stevasaurus video's on the 5060 transmission to help guide you through the process.https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0WxpigBM-CFt3jm0aCxvxw 1
Joshn569 273 #17 Posted February 7, 2018 Got the trans split open. Kind of nasty inside. Hi/Lo shift fork has a lot of wear. The gears have some wear also on the teeth. I will try and get the other shafts out and inspected next day or so and get a parts list together. Let me know what you guys think or see thus far
WHX?? 49,486 #18 Posted February 7, 2018 Thanks for the pics Johsn... the good news is that trannny looks to be saveable. I was under the impression that the S/G motors went away in late '67 and all of the '68 Raiders had bendix starters and mag ignition but who knows fer sure? You might be sitting on a early 68 where they were useing a few 67 motors up? Keep the coming! Dan note the AL diff. ends? Diff nuts toward the right? I bet this one has never beeen opened before.

WHX?? 49,486 #20 Posted February 7, 2018 Then again looking at you pics Joshn Someone might have been in that tranny before. Clues are no nyloc nuts on case bolts and unpainted capped bearings.
pfrederi 17,986 #21 Posted February 7, 2018 Interested in seeing the spring inside your differential when you get it open.
Joshn569 273 #22 Posted February 7, 2018 Put my oldest son to work today cleaning with a tooth brush. 👍 Waiting on some chemicals and cleaners i ordered online so i can clean up all the parts in a make shift parts washer. At this point, i think kit #4 and a new shift fork should do it. 6 hours ago, WHX14 said: Then again looking at you pics Joshn Someone might have been in that tranny before. WHX?? 49,486 #23 Posted February 7, 2018 Yup @wheelhorseman's # 4 will make it like new again! You can use kerosene & small paint brush for a makeshift parts washer but be sure to tell yer boy no smoking!
Joshn569 273 #24 Posted February 12, 2018 not much to report. Just been cleaning and removing paint. Initially i was going to just paint over the frame but i decided to strip it down to bare metal and will use rustoleum etching primer. Decided on rustoleum regal red with rustoleum clear. I dont typically paint my projects myself ( i have done a few dirt bikes and old trucks ect) but i have been studying up on how to get a nice looking rattle can job. Hope to order my trans rebuild kit with in the next week or 2. Then i will tear into the motor. This has been a fun project so far and a joy to work on this old tractor. A lot of excellant builds and projects on red square that have really inspired me! I kind of feel a little guilty as i have never done anything to my c81 except a quick tune up and grease job. Hope she dont get to jelous 6
Tankman 3,520 #25 Posted February 12, 2018 (edited) Great project! Certainly worth all efforts to save the Horse! Grandson decided te Raider is "his" Stallion. Shall see when his legs sprout. Right now he'll be on his Mustang first! Edited February 12, 2018 by Tankman 3
