No matter what anyone else thinks, It's your tractor! BUT... I really like that idea !!! It gives credit and recognition to both new and old status and drivetrain etc.

Pullstart 62,831 #28 Posted March 19, 2018 You're awesome Terry! I'm pretty sure something like that would be great! Some more pictures I was able to grab this morning. My 10 year old daughter gave me a hand Saturday night and we had some torch safety lessons. With the torch and a 20 ton arbor press, the hubs slid right off (fighting us tooth and nail) those 1-1/8" axles! The trans is pretty loose and requires a fill up every time I run it... probably a good time to open 'er up and see how bad the inside really is. A while back I built some front axle spacers and spun them on the lathe to get about .010" play for the wheel to keep some grease. With the drilled and tapped hubs I'll be able to run the C-101 caps in front when I'm finished. Never mind the small bit of "toe in" on one of the pics! 3
Pullstart 62,831 #29 Posted March 20, 2018 I drained (mostly) and split the trans case this morning, much to my surprise one of the intermediate shafts has NO needle bearing, not even the bearing cage left in the casting! The other needle bearings are toast, broken bits of bearings all over in the case. Judging by the shape of some gears I've seen in some other trans rebuilds, I'm just facing bearing surface issues and seals, along with a good cleanup of course. @stevasaurus or @Racinbob, any input on the shape of the bearing areas of the case or the shafts?
Racinbob 11,048 #30 Posted March 20, 2018 It's hard to tell for sure in the pictures but I'm thinking you'll be fine. That kinda surprises me considering what happened to the bearings. I'd suggest getting things cleaned up better.
stevasaurus 22,713 #31 Posted March 20, 2018 What Bob said...a good clean up for sure. Double check that some of that bearing case is not still in the hole. That stuff has a way of hiding. Those #1533's look a little rough, you will have to see how they clean up. Lowell sells those new now if you need to replace them.
Pullstart 62,831 #32 Posted March 21, 2018 Everything has slop, so I'm planning to replace all the bearings I can get my hands on. To the touch, at least one of the intermediate shafts feel worn, not sure If that is the same as a 3 speed trans or special to the 8 speed? I might be able to tig weld it up and cut it back on the lathe if need be...
953 nut 55,164 #33 Posted March 21, 2018 How about 802-8 ? Terry likes to do custom jobs. https://www.redoyourhorse.com/custom-designs/ 1
Pullstart 62,831 #34 Posted March 21, 2018 Thought about that too. I guess with the 502 (and little)8-8, someone will really need to look to figure out what's special about it.
Pullstart 62,831 #35 Posted April 17, 2018 Haven't gotten a ton done lately as we were on an adults only couples vacation with some friends on a Western Caribbean Carnival cruise for spring break. Yah yah, big reason to complain, huh? Tonight I prepped the frame for some primer and a coat of regal red, I plan to give all the big components one coat of red before I assemble the majority of the rolling chassis, then give it all another coat or three. I've also been working on a reese hitch platform to make my short little bed into a suitable horse hauler for the trip to the big show!
Pullstart 62,831 #36 Posted June 8, 2018 Wow, time flies... I still haven't gotten much further than the pics in the thread... and the big show is less than 2 weeks away! I ordered a trans rebuild kit from Lowell, the ebay carb, new tires and tubes, a skinny air filter, and maybe some other stuff to help me get off my butt and finish this thing. Frame's in primer sitting on the bench, I'll be jammin' on this thing here soon! See ya at the show... -Pullstart
Pullstart 62,831 #37 Posted June 12, 2018 Some pictures to get us up to speed here... Still blasting, cleaning, painting. One of my tires showed up yesterday, the other is lost in shipment from the NW side of Grand Rapids to my place 20 minutes south. Yay... I'm guessing there were 3 or 4 points of handling between the two? The eBay seller stated it was coming from California, but it shipped locally! Gotta love warehousing. The carb and tubes showed up too. Some of the pictures appear to be in whatever order they choose, sorry about that! 6-11-18 Grinding the welds in on the hood a couple months ago... or weeks. I'm not sure. After some hammer and dolly, I think it's ready to get blasted and primed, then some skim coating and sanding. Here's a "what's in your mirror" pic. I was hauling the C-101 to my Sister and Brother in-law's new house to do some one bottom plow invisible fence trenching. The frame was primed back in April... 1
Pullstart 62,831 #38 Posted June 12, 2018 These pictures are from this morning, so we're up to date. I'm on par for leaving with a finished tractor next Wednesday morning, right? Still need to finish the ramp system for my truck rack that I was building. My front tires are loaded, so I'll do my best to mask them off, blast 'em and paint 'em to match the rears.
Pullstart 62,831 #39 Posted June 12, 2018 Here's what I plan to attempt the skim coating with on the hood. It's a two part epoxy type jb weld something or another that I found at the local ACE Hardware. If I don't get many more updates, it's not cuz I don't love y'all, I'm just busy! Pullstart 62,831 #40 Posted June 14, 2018 6/13 pics... we got chicks yesterday, the coop isn't finished but it's weather proof and critter-tight for now. Since I made the support for the exhaust, I figured I'd build a couple little set screws to keep everything from rotating. I understand that's quite a bit of mass to keep upright for a 13 hour journey... give or take. Got the hood stripped fairly well, time for some elbow grease and wet sanding.
Pullstart 62,831 #41 Posted June 14, 2018 6/14/18 Good Morning RedSquare! A perfect day to be preppin' for paint! I found great joy to find the draw marks in the round hood... from some 56 years ago. I'm going to try to skim my welds but as mentioned in the beginning, I'll be leaving some of the scars and bruises. This tractor has earned it just like we've earned ours. It's a story, it's a good time, it's hard work.

Pullstart 62,831 #45 Posted June 14, 2018 I guess there's time to upload pictures, when you're literally watching paint dry! The hood has been layered with grey/black so I can do some more wet sanding when I skim the welded area. More stuff is colory. I used a hammered black paint for the wheels, so to tie things together the front hanging weight is hammered now too. A couple things to note about background articles: the race car is not mine. Many of the vehicles and machinery in the background are not mine either. But I did pick up this Scag Freedom Z 52" ZTR this week, to relieve the C-101 42" RD of the 3 acres to mow. It's the same color as Mrs. Pullstart's tractor, so it can't be all that bad, eh? I guess there's time to upload pictures, when you're literally watching paint dry! I did my best to skim coat the welds this afternoon, stuff just takes a bit to set up though.. Package says 24 hrs given our weather conditions. I suppose I have plenty to keep me busy before I get to shaping the skim job.
Pullstart 62,831 #48 Posted June 15, 2018 This trans is in pretty rough shape... not having much of any bearings to speak of. I sure hope when the trans kit from Lowell gets here, that it all comes together tighter than it came apart!
Pullstart 62,831 #49 Posted June 15, 2018 I picked up this gem at an estate sale a few weeks back. I'd imagine that this was Toro - pre Wheel Horse? 2
