A mangle is a big ironing machine, used for sheets & such before the days of permanent press. 

 

Called a mangle because if you weren't careful, that's what would happen to your hands & arms.

When I looked it up I knew immediately what it was for. 

And how dangerous they certainly can be. 

As kids we had a sort of third set of grandparents. They had a Ringer in their second home. I definitely don't recall ever being allowed to mess with it.  

Probably a good thing.

Mangles / Ringers were popular back when OSHA was still a small town in Wisconsin... 

 

Had one in our basement growing up. It was Mom's exclusive domain and a "No Touch!!!" Item...

There's an old double tub Dexter with a Ringer still in the basement at the farm.  Used to get some of the water out before hanging on the line.

Amish neighbor has a wringer washer, the "ringer" didn't waste the baby's thumb, the belts and pulleys underneath did it.  I spent all day running the family around Lancaster County to find a quack doctor, that wasn't at the horse show, to get the kid fixed up with a cardboard cast.
