They are solid on the rims so have left them soaking in WD40 for a while, hopefully that will help break the bead....that and a large hammer! Who knows how long they have been on the rims for. Forgot to bring the little key for removing the tyre valve, luckily two very small flat head screw drivers does the same trick. Now its time to go to work, but its strangely comforting having a project from home to keep me busy The big ones are not keen to come off the rims, rust must have welded them on. We are in Aberdeen in the morning so will see if I can get them up to a tyre machine as I dont have a large bolster on here to bully them off. I took one off the van last year and that had a sledge hammer on a bolster and a lot of sweat to get it off. Usually just driving over it is enough to pop the bead.

On the rear wheels- I've used a 2x6 board about 3 feet long, set on the tire almost to the edge of the rim like a ramp, then ease my truck onto the "ramp" with decent results. Usually the bead breaks as soon as you get the weight onto the plank. Then back up, flip the wheel, and repeat on the other side. ...of course with the valves removed. My make a loud bang otherwise. 2

That sounds easier than the way I do it, usually just diving onto the tyre - however haven't had to resort to that with a wheelhorse rim yet, and a car tyre is a larger target! Will have a play today with the big electric buggy and a plank, and if that fails there is a tyre shop just up the road, although that would seem like accepting defeat and also probably cost money.

Dan.gerous 2,696 #15632 Posted May 7, 2022 Managed to blag my way for the tyre bloke to ping these off today. Didn't want paying but I got them a box of chocolates as a thank you. Now the job can begin.

While I was watching the plumber fix our intake pipe on the septic tank, I was having similar thoughts. When I first dug the pipe up to confirm it was cracked, I briefly thought about doing it myself. It is nice to be older and to have the resources to have the opportunity to farm out jobs you really don't want, or can't do yourself. 6

The rust line on the tube from water coming in around the valve tells the tale. 1

squonk 41,150 #15645 Posted May 7, 2022 Gonna need a bigger light or move the battery. I probably have changed over 1000 tires in my life. I take every tire I need changing down the street to the tire shop. It ain't worth it to me to fight with them anymore. 2

Good call I'm still angling at getting my own one, good used ones aren't that expensive. Biggest problem is the space it takes up and the fact we seem to move on average once a year!! Mature, sensible, or adult don't necessarily coincide with being old - especially when referring to Red Square members. 1
