I have to rebuild my 48 inch SD deck for my 1994 520H.

I have new spindles with the sleeves as shown in the pic (yellow rag).

My concern is “Do you have to, or can you line up the grease holes in the sleeves with the grease holes in the spindle shafts”

And since the holes with positively not be, or stay lined up, will the grease work it’s way to the bearings ?… this has been in the back of my mind since I first looked closely at the design…

That's what I am working on now. I will put new bearings in when I assemble them. I have done the spindles before on another deck and the grease does work it's way to the bearings no matter if the sleeve holes are lined up with the shaft grease holes or not. However, most new bearings that I have purchased come with a "dust cover" on both sides of the bearing so you have to make sure to remove it on the side that is going to face inward.

Thank you @Andy N.… I bought the new complete spindle assemblies from @76c12091520h, and I believe he said he built them with bearings that did not have a dust seal on the inward sides, but I will confirm that before/ when I reassemble the deck.

Good stuff. Brush it on. If the metal has surface rust, it sticks even better and has a slick finish. Just be sure there is no grease on the steel. It hardens like epoxy, and should last all season or more under the mower deck. One little pint will be enough for a 48 inch deck. It goes a long way. Tape over all the holes on the deck from the top before applying. Otherwise it will run all over the top and you'll have to chisel it off.

And wear gloves. No hand cleaner on earth will get it off your skin. I'm talking like two weeks to wear off...

And wear clothes that'll wear a few black spots well. It'll outlast the fabric.

Plenty of space between sleeve and shaft for the grease to migrate in to the bearings

one concern I have found is (I should have documented this) when greasing I like to gradually pump in the grease. I bench tested two different spindles and had one that the top seal pushed up slightly because of the way the bottom of the pulley was made. I ended up putting a thin washer under that pulley to help retain the seal.

when I greased, about 5 shots in the spring, 5 shots mid season.

A few years ago I’ve started using sealed bearings and no greasing, no issues. I just figured if the mule drive runs with sealed bearings and they lasted why not? (I like using the better bearing mfg. like Timken or SKF in that application)

Some still like to grease and that’s good too!

@Horse Newbie  recommend using , LUCAS  X-TRA HEAVY DUTY GREASE , walmart , $ 7 , hi temp , 560 deg, anti sling , and polyurea rated , what I do is to clean out and repack , new bearings with this , you also remove the inside bearing seals in the housing to allow the grease gun to get to them , leave the upper and lower seals on the bearings. the right grease will be quiet and last in those spindles . my 3 decks have this set up , very quiet and no whining bearings . you should hand pack those bearings , to insure reliable / quiet running , those rubber side shields easily pop off , wipe out and carb clean residue , then repack with same amount of the hi temp grease  . pete

Started one of the 418 A's  yesterday.....and there is a noise / intermittent  sound coming from everywhere......M18 Kohler. There was no noise there in December when it ran last. Sort of a buzzing / tapping strange sound. Very hard to describe. There are no balance gears in the M twin engines are there???  Seems to run fine, plugs are a good color.......very odd noise and I'm afraid to use it?

Any ideas????

I will check for that today...it lives in my heated garage with all of the other Horses, and I have traps everywhere. Never caught a critter.. Its a strange sound. Also going to check needle bearing in PTO pulley...I put a screwdriver to the starter to be sure it was not staying engaged..no noise from it..

@johnnymag3  that pto needle bearing needs a hi temp grease , not a lot of grease , excess will sling onto clutch face . like the lucas xtra heavy duty green grease, , 560 deg rated, anti sling and polyurea rated , whats not to like ?  use it on all my stuff , pete

Took off all of the tins......spotless. Took off PTO hub...perfect...Ran it with nothing on it....same terrible noise...Very cyclical...and can hear the noise with a screwdriver to the ear...coming from the inside I believe. No knocks...just alot of heavy clicking.

Time to remove and toss it in the trash I guess

That’s a bummer

Hopefully it will go away on its own

i see one of your interests is golf

go play a round, pull out the big head club and take your frustrations out on the ball

That’s what I do after a triple or quadruple bogey 😂😩

Perhaps something in the valves? I believe someone here will be along with some better suggestions. That tractor is beautiful and I would do my best to keep it with that sweet 18HP Series two. Wish I could help more.
