All of mine were also loose. Can't answer your ? about the broken magnet, but make sure you put them back in the correct orientation. North to South, North to South, North to South, etc. I really don't think the missing 1/2" piece would bother a lot, but I don't really know. Stator magnets Skip to 4:50 in video Not too sure about the impact on the flywheel nut though. Edited November 29, 2021 by Gregor
johnnymag3 2,520 #13777 Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) I guess I can compensate for the missing chunk in the spacing between the magnets to keep balance somewhat equal...or glue the piece in with the appropiate magnet? thanks for the video....great teacher !!! ebinmaine 67,596 #13778 Posted November 29, 2021 @c-series don I'll second that. @johnnymag3 it would be awesome to have your info in a dedicated thread. Don check out @pfrederi Paul's thread on his M18 rebuild.

I'm not sure that's a good idea. I think it's possible the large chunk of that magnet will have it's own polarity, as will the small chunk. Someone who knows more about it needs to chime in. @Tractorheadmaybe? Edited November 29, 2021 by Gregor

Changing either the magnet setup or not getting the balance just right is likely not going to be a good idea. Remember there's an exponential difference between static weight and dynamic weight.
Gregor 4,846 #13781 Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) It's just possible mating the 2 pieces back together again, and gluing them in place, might restore polarity to the whole magnet. DON'T glue the 2 pieces to each other. Edited November 29, 2021 by Gregor
johnnymag3 2,520 #13782 Posted November 29, 2021 I do have the piece that came off...and it does fit very nicely ??
johnnymag3 2,520 #13783 Posted November 29, 2021 Im leaning towards getting new magnets....may be a better option...

Hold the 2 pieces together the best you can, without gluing. Using another magnet, see if the good magnet reacts the same way to both ends of the broken magnet. Attracts? Repels? I would try more than 1 good magnet.

You buy the flywheel, not just the magnets. Unless someone has some old ones that they KNOW are the correct ones. johnnymag3 2,520 #13786 Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) I found a set on ebay.......3 reds and 3 greens 50.00 unsure of OEM quality though... Edited November 29, 2021 by johnnymag3
Gregor 4,846 #13787 Posted November 29, 2021 Lincoln at A to Z Tractor may be able to set you up with a new (used) flywheel for the same money. I have bought a couple flywheels from him.
Gregor 4,846 #13788 Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) You have the flywheel off, you may as well check the stator. Skip to 10:13 in video. Checking stator If you HAVE to remove the stator, DON"T ! They are steel screws going into aluminum. They don't really come out well. I broke 2 of them. Was able to fix one. johnnymag3 2,520 #13789 Posted November 29, 2021 Checked the stator...not sure where to set the meter...seems to be good?? Maybe have the ohms of resistance wrong?

johnnymag3 2,520 #13791 Posted November 29, 2021 what range??? 20 ohms?
Gregor 4,846 #13792 Posted November 29, 2021 yes. Also touch your meter leads together (without stator), and record that reading.
Gregor 4,846 #13794 Posted November 30, 2021 My meter set on 200 ohms. Leads together .20 checking stator .30 .30-.20=.10 Within spec Spec is .064 - . 2 You are set on 2 mega ohms? Not sure how you are even getting a reading. But electronics is not my strong suit. AT ALL ! Set your meter on
Gregor 4,846 #13796 Posted November 30, 2021 (edited) A difference of .10 That is within spec of .064 - .2 Edited November 30, 2021 by Gregor
johnnymag3 2,520 #13797 Posted November 30, 2021 I am missing an entire magnet !!!! Local Dealer has a few he can give me to fill in the gap. I will be sure to use the opoposite polarity
