Tuneup 1,433 #12176 Posted July 12, 2021 That'll keep the 312 moving along! My kids called and said the electric dryer stopped working so Mr. Maintenance took a drive - I like to teach and they absorb it like a sponge (well one of them does). Dryer all cleaned and checked. The old multimeter has a new home. A 30A breaker actually crapped out on one side. I have never seen this! Yeah, this place is my Facebook. In Wheel Horse news, the trip to the hardware store yielded three cans of Sunrise Red so the 48" deck gets its paint this week.

Not often... but my 'day job' deals with circuit breakers a lot. (not in the panel boards but in the equipment racks) I've also seen them go what I call 'soft', where they trip at a lower current than their rating.
OutdoorEnvy 1,522 #12178 Posted July 12, 2021 Was surprised the turf tires moved this big log! Was thinking for sure it wouldn't have enough bite. Must have been all the added extra weight with me sitting on it 7 2 1

Ed Kennell 38,162 #12180 Posted July 12, 2021 I started out planning to mow the right o way around the farm and some woods trails. I got about a 1/4 mile from the house and the deck drive belt came off. I loosened the mule drive andreached under to put the belt back on the center pulley and it was gone. I found the pulley in the grass to the left of the tractor. Lucky it didn't go the other way into the beans. The spindle had dropped downnand the blade was dragging, so I had to find some ramps to get it high enough to get the spindle out for the ride home. When I took the deck off, the bolt and washers were still laying on top of the deck. While I had the deck off, I removed the other two spindles and greased the bearings. These do not have zerks. Back to mowing after the 2 hour delay. 12

D_Mac 8,611 #12185 Posted July 13, 2021 Well since I have the flywheel off of the 500 Special to get new coil, points, and condenser. I thought I would do some more painting. The engine was not original and had nice paint on it but it was gray. Not anymore. I'm not going to paint the whole engine as the blower housing covers most of it. I will be painting the wheels when they come back from getting new tires mounted. I wanted to paint the wheels beforehand but didn't have time. 13
Tuneup 1,433 #12186 Posted July 13, 2021 Dying to test that the tweak on the throttle cable on the 516 allows it to sit at 3600 instead of dropping over time. Fired it up and headed out to the tall grass - overdue since it's rained almost every day and I won't mow wet if I can help it. Hit the blades and all was well. Stopped after 50 feet and looked back. Scalping with the center and left??? Back to the garage to drop the deck and the left bracket bolt and spacer had decided to make a home somewhere in the lawn. This is how my machine tells me it needs maintenance. Found replacements from the parts of an old 36" stripped deck. Pulled the deck and, crap!, what a dirty clumped mess! So now it's to cleaning, pressure washing, lubing, blade sharpening and locktiting this 42 SD. The lawn can wait a few more days.
OldWorkHorse 3,045 #12187 Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) Drilled a hole to run the battery cables on the 1257 through, reused a rubber ring off the Toro 117 that alone made the purchase worth it . Edited July 13, 2021 by OldWorkHorse 6
D_Mac 8,611 #12188 Posted July 13, 2021 Well more progress on the 500 Special. New coil, points, and condenser installed. Pulled the head and going to clean it off and put in new head gasket. Going to run new fuel line and put in a shut off valve. Went and got a new drive belt from Tractor Supply. The tabs for the belt cover are all missing or busted. Going to have to jury rig something for that. Shouldn't be long now but tomorrow I go back to work again. 6

Tuneup 1,433 #12191 Posted July 15, 2021 I do love those tecs. The 516 has its deck again, cleaned and sharpened. The central arbor can use new bearings - a little rough. It can wait the season, though. She mowed the deep stuff wonderfully and the throttle stayed locked at 3500. Can't say enough good things about these old machines. They take some lovin' but it is always worth it.

D_Mac 8,611 #12193 Posted July 15, 2021 Got the new tires mounted and the rims painted for the 500 Special. Painted rims white to match the decals. Won't be long now until it's finished. 4

Pullstart 62,843 #12195 Posted July 15, 2021 Tugged a heavy load into the back barn today. 8 horse powers was all I needed... and a little extra grip might have helped! 3 4

If I would have tried to pull that load with my 51 horse tractor, there would be nothing but rims left... LOL You should get some sticky compound for those tires!!!
