What have you done to your Wheel Horse today?

I have the hood ornament. It wasn't fastened on when I got the tractor, so I took it off for safe keeping.

@Gregor I'll dig out that hood and see what it looks like and if it will fit. Perhaps we can relay it to the Dino who can relay it close to you. Shipping would be a bear unless some of the other guys have ideas. I'll take no money for it as most of those hoods I got for free off auction piles. We'll work somthing out.

Not today tho I get seat time with ladies in waiting plus a Packer game to get ready for! :greetings-clappingyellow:

Last night I went to war with my new 520 front tires.  Carrying nothing but a set of tire spoons I was ill prepared for what I thought would be a simple task.  I may have won one of the battles, but the new tires won the war.  I will be replacing one of the new tires with another new unit soon.  I damaged the bead fighting it on the rim.  I never imagined it would be so difficult.  Not messing around on the next one.  I am taking to Dad's garage to use the tire changing tool.

Those can sure be a right regular BUGGER.

I usually use the full sized HF manual tire changer to break the bead all around.

Then use generous slippery substance to remove and remount.

I also started using tubes in every tire I change a couple years ago. MUCH easier to set the bead.

Another trick for holding the tire is to get a 3/4" bolt or piece of all thread. Several nuts, washers, maybe a giant wing nut for the top.

Mount the hugemongous bolt in a vise and the wheel to to the hugemongous bolt.

I have a 3/4" all thread like EB was talking about but mine is bolted through the work bench. Holds the wheel while tires go on or off.  plasdtic lid under the rim and some fingers cut from an old leather glove help save the paint.

Maybe because they don't want tires to last 40-50 years, like the :wh: tires do :teasing-poke:

I still have the original tires on my 68 Commandos

I've fought that battle one too many times...and wasn't going to chance marring my freshly powder coated wheels.

So now its Walmart tire center and local landscape supplier dealer...saves aspirin.

Thanks for all the responses everyone.  You have some great ideas and solutions for these tiny tire changing problems.  I talked with Dad yesterday and found out his tire changing tool does not fit tiny wheels.

At that point in time I decided to purchase the mini tire changing tool from harbor freight.  It's not my most glamorous moment, but hopefully it will keep me from damaging another tire.  It was $45 and the tire I ended up scraping was $35.  An expensive lesson in changing little tires.  If the tool doesn't work well I think I will give up and take them in next time!

At one point in time I had the wheel supported on 1 inch shaft in the bench vice.  It still fought me to no end and back.  Temperature had to help play a role in my struggles.

Temperature

Temperature and lubrication are two huge issues that most people don't think to put in their favor when changing tires.

Find yourself a bucket or a tote or whatever that the tires will fit in.

Figure out what it's going to take to submerge those tires and get that amount of water at the hottest point you can possibly stand. Bunches of liquid soap as well.

Leave them in there to set for 10 minutes.

Also keep in mind that when one side of the tire is mounted on the rim and then you try to mount the other side, make sure that the tire that is already on the rim is setting at the narrowest point of the rim. That's bitten me in the past more than once.

You think I'd learn about that one but I just don't......

A big c clamp to make one side of the tire skinny will help it stay in that narrow center of the wheel too!

If you could wrangle that damaged tire on a rim I would use it with an inner tube instead of tossing it.
