I agree with eb turfs with chains are hard to beat in the snow. Edited October 3, 2020 by sqrlgtr 5
ebinmaine 67,540 #6852 Posted October 3, 2020 I spent some time working on the Charger hydro project. Trina and her mom were in the yard processing Firewood amongst a ton of other things. Finished up dismantling the plant supports from the garden boxes and stacked 3 trailer loads of wood after moving it from the backyard to the front yard. The pics below are what they did this afternoon. Trina got out her little electric chainsaw. They cut up 4 loads then moved it to the splitter. Stacked it. Split it all up. I spent bout 2 hours putting brush through the chipper. Part of clearing the back yard. I'll post pics of that project later. 5
echris 1,425 #6853 Posted October 3, 2020 Ooooh shiny hydro parts. That's not a log splitter, that's a log killer! That thing looks like a beast!

Traction is about grabbing and you can't push down into the ground without enough weight. I've used all combinations of turfs, ags, chains and no chains. The best traction I've had is with turfs and chains. The AG tires tend to let the chains fall into the wide tread thereby decreasing usefulness of the chain. Lots of weight. ALOT. If you have an asphalt driveway you can use rubber chains with great effect. Eric I think you are right about the chains on turf tires. We had enough snow to plow about 3 years ago here in Va about 15". I chained up and was able to get it done (gravel drive) but not in the most efficient way (lot of slipping) I need weights! Working on that...Thank you much! 2

She's a rugged buggah for sure. We have a forest of about 70% beechwood. Burns great. BTU about equal to hard maples. Can be tough to handle because it's very twisty and has plenty of knots. But it also grows fast so there's plenty forever. We've put pieces of beechwood through the splitter that were 22" + diameter. Hit the governor and just kept pushing... Here's a thread from not long after Trina bought it. These pics show the shed overhang before it was a chicken 🐔 house (coop and run). Also shows Patriot Horse before it was painted.

Made of sugar instead of salt so no metal rot. Weighs about 10.5 to 11 lbs per gallon. Much heavier than antifreeze or washer fluid.

rjg854 11,371 #6864 Posted October 4, 2020 Tore the 854 apart, and put a rebuilt transmission on and working on tightening up the steering because of some slop in the wheel. Gotta make a run to town tomorrow for larger roll pins. I just happened to have a bushing that will work for where the steering wheel shaft goes through the gas tank.
