pfrederi 17,739 #8927 Posted January 28, 2021 Finally got started on a heavy maintenance of the 418A. show about 1300 hrs but the meter didn't work when I got it and has had sporadic outages since. I make a new pin (weld a piece of steel on 3/4 round stock ) Drill out the axle to 7/8" and press in two sleeve bearings. The tab on the pin if it is still bolted in place seems to protect the rear frame hole. Just made a small plate drilled to 3/4 and welded it on the front. You need to make your new pin longer That's what I did for the frame and front support on the big tractor build. Axle was perfectly fine. Lane Ranger 10,968 #8933 Posted January 28, 2021 Two projects today required on tractors that were bothering me for weeks! I just kept avoiding working on them! I had my 853 set up for snowplowing this winter. Used it twice but noticed a leak and saw it was coming from one side of the tank underneath. I have owned this tractor for five years and never had a leak before. However, it is one of those two piece tanks and low and behold it was leaking out the side. So I see the sheet metal screws are not original and that means the previous owner must have put a new seal in. Turns out the sheet metal screws were loses! Loosened up I suppose from use! I tighter all up snd no more leak. However I will probably redo in summer with some permatex or whatever on the sheet metal screws. The second issue was my B80 that had not been running correctly and I have changed spark plug, cleaned carb and carb needle and finally started to run ok. Put the snowplow on the B80 and completed one pass on the dive and she died. Started again and she died. Ok what is it? I pushed her back in the garage and got her running again and adjusted carb . Sat on seat and turned her over and when I released my foot from clutch she died. So I figured must be an electrical safety switch issue! Looked at PTO switch, clutch then seat! Ah ha, my seat is a replacement Michigan Seat from Northern Tool from about nine years ago. It has a place for the original seat safety switch. However, the switch has a sticky foam pad that holds it to the seat bottom to ground. It was hanging loose probably from the cold etc. So I cut a piece of black duct tape and stuck the pad back on the seat bottom! Started like the old days, ran for thirty minutes as I finished the driveway plowing and glory be that was the needed fix! Never seen one in person before, but youtube convinced me, then finding red square, I had to find a nice horse. we are 2 months further, and I am having some bad luck with the trannys: Welded hubs, loose axles, disapeard axle bearings, loose hubs, oh yeah, did I already mentioned that they are all leaking tranny fluid. So I started on fixing trannys today at 8p.m. local time here. I already was finding these trannys so heavy, but when i opened it........ WOOOOWWW that final gear is HUUGEEE! Applause for Wheel Horse , the damn quality off this stuff. I finally convinced my parents that that old junk, maybe old, but surely ain't junk! The P.O. trusted a welder to fix the unlevel deck situation, while all along it was a broken lift link on the tractor. Needed to add some air to the fluid filled wheels, they seemed to be a bit soft and was worried they might blow the bead. Lost one of the roller chains on a front wheel, so put that back on. One of the the wheels on the blower broke off, so I had to put the skid back on, until I can get it rewelded. Adjusted the skids on the plow now that I've got a good base built up on driveway. All I did was worry for weeks as to whether I did it right. No time to care when the time runs out so - delay. Today, cleaned the P216 pan. Some water contamination in the bottom - brown and didn't react to brake cleaner so had to wipe it all out with a towel. Last owner.... Cleaned the rear head and sanded the surface - I use the concrete floor as the level says it's flat. I know.... Attached the head. Out of time.
