Jhook 849 #7876 Posted November 24, 2020 Update. Belt engagement lever removed and out of the way. Trans is unbolted and ready to be rolled out. Just debating now whether i want to go back outside and spend another 15 mins in the cold and dark and get it completely removed tonight, or wait til another day. Also the 1969 trailblazer 5 snow blower is sold and being picked up tomorrow evening. And the snow cab i think is being sold friday. I stop in the middle of a few projects to buy this loader and am thinking i can live without a cab on the 315 this winter. The 500 bucks from the sale of those 2 items will go half to the bank and half towards steel and hydraulic hoses to get loader subframe built and functioning properly. D_Mac 8,623 #7877 Posted November 24, 2020 (edited) Working on the 857 I notice i have a problem. I was wondering why the brakes were bad so I took the rear wheel off and was planning on tightening the band and I discovered that the brake drum dosnt always spin with the wheel. I am guessing that the shaft that goes into the tranny must have something loose? Tractor drives fine. Anyone have this issue before? D_Mac 8,623 #7879 Posted November 24, 2020 Its when I spin the wheel/tire. The brake drum dosnt spin with the wheel/tire. It rotates some then stops then will rotate some more. I think maybe a key in there must have fallen out? I am not the guy to try and open the tranny.

The shaft it rides on should have 2 flat spots on it to keep it from spinning unless the trans is spinning. The hole inside your brake wheel may be bored out or rounded out from use. Jhook 849 #7881 Posted November 24, 2020 Its been a productive night. I pulled the fenders/seatpan/toolbox off the charger. Jacked it up and set it on blocks, then unbolted the trans and rolled it right out. Looks like the motion control seal is the only leak!! Easy first tranny pull on a horse. Not as bad as i thought👍 is there anything else you guys would recommend doing while the trans is out? Keep in mind i can not move the tractor at all til its re installed. Its in my driveway(shop) til i finish this seal. 1

WIX 51410 filter and fluid change Good thinking, i honestly was going to do that before operating it, but if you hadnt reminded me i wouldn't have remembered til after it was reinstalled. Might be a little easier while it's spaced away from the tractor. Will pick up a filter tomorrow. I have 3 gallons of red atf fluid from tractorsupply. What store sells a wix 51410 filter? Try it with the other wheel or both wheels. could be normal action of the differential.

Correct. 857 shouldn't have LSD so that has to be checked with both wheels off the ground and turning simultaneously.

It isn't on drugs. the 857 would not have the limited slip, it has the older 5053. 10 hours ago, D_Mac said: Its when I spin the wheel/tire. The brake drum dosnt spin with the wheel/tire. If one wheel is on the ground in neutral and the other is jacked up your brake drum will spin with the wheel. I don't think the woodruff key could fall out under any circumstances. The flat spots @Jhook mentioned are on much later brake drums.

Replace them especially if you found the bolts loose loose when the head is pulled. Over or under torqued bolts will suffer fatigue failures quicker than properly torqued bolts.

Any chance I see original carbs cheap I buy them. Needless to say I have a pile too that needs rebuilding, makes good winter projects 1

Jhook 849 #7900 Posted November 25, 2020 Seal is all done and trans reinstalled. Serious question for you guys: with the rear end jacked up, when i rotate the tires the inside of the axle sounds like the wheel of fortune, is this normal? Keep in mind this is with no fluid in the trans. Have not spun it with fluid to see if it sounds different. Also theres a large amount of play at the hubs, yet no fluid leaking there. Is it fine to run it like that?
