JCM 9,130 #5351 Posted June 20, 2020 @echris Today before I was able to straighten the side of the tunnel I had to remove the brake rod which on a 420 it runs beside the frame behind the lift cylinder and hydraulic hoses before it enters the tunnel and it is close to the bottom above the frame with no room to work and a cotter pin broken off sticking out about a 64th of an inch on both sides at a 45 degree angle. I needed to walk around the yard for 5 minutes before I came up with an idea. I took a file and reached down inside holding the rod from the out side and made very short strokes about 50 times before the cotter pin was flush with the rod. Pulled it out and knocked the remainder of the cotter pin out with the roll pin punch. Why anyone would put a cotter pin down there is beyond me. Hairpin is going back on the reinstall. It seems I remember in a parts book that there originally was a hairpin. I'd like to meet the guy that put that cotter pin in there. 3

D_Mac 8,593 #5366 Posted June 20, 2020 Assembled the deck. Going to let it sit outside unless we get some rain. Waiting for the decals to arrive from @Vinylguy . Might see if I can go over to where the tractor is and grab 2 wheels off it. I will put it up on jack stands, paint 2 , bring them back and grab the other 2. Guess I will paint them silver, I think thats what they were originally. Hard to tell. 7

My Neighbor, Dave, you know the crusty old guy with the beer in his shirt pocket driving my 310? Well he taught me years ago the power of the stainless. His basement shop is the most complete shop I've ever seen. Oh it's a mess no doubt, but if you want it, he likely has it. I quite literally have a hardware store next door to me. No wonder we've been good friends for over 20 years. Me: Dave, got any 1/4-20 nylocks floating around? I just need two. Dave: Do you want black oxide, zinc (nah just kidding, I don't have zinc, they're crap. Actually over here I might have some zinc, Oh look a coupla boxes of 250 pcs.), stainless or stainless? I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! I once asked him, way back when I first moved in if I could borrow a 1" combo wrench. He said, "Keep it." I replied, "I only need it for about 10 minutes." Dave replied, "I ain't giving you nothing I don't already have 10 of." He wasn't lying. Here's a pic of his shop I took back in 2016. Look at the top right of the pic. Dave is the only person I know who has a box in his shop, stuffed full, labeled "Carbon". 6 2
echris 1,425 #5373 Posted June 21, 2020 And here's where it really gets funny. Dave is an old school engineer and scientist. Usually when you ask him a "why", he will give you all the science until your eyes roll back in your head. Ask him why he has a box, chock full, labeled, "Carbon" and he'll reply, "Well..what would I use it for? I don't know, but I might need some carbon one day." Love that old coot. 5 1
Boat guy 40 #5374 Posted June 21, 2020 Just bought this today for my property I just purchased, not a big place just not quite small for a push mower. Got it and trailer for 550.00. Seemed fair.. It did not run when I purchased it, I was told everything was fined as usual. Lol. Being just shy of 60 I knew I was in for a little bit, so what did I do to my wheel horse today?. Clean the carburetor, resealed the fuel tank petcock on the bottom that was leaking like a sieve, And clean all the grunge out of it, Replace completely melted voltage regulator plug with quality marine terminals, ( Still not charging ) Change the oil, cleaned up the points so I can start it as new ones and plug have been ordered, Adjust carburetor and governor, stared at it alot... lol At 1st I thought I made a mistake Getting it for the property but after correcting all the backwards things on it from p.o. it ran like a champ. Got lots more to do as I know now it will be exactly what I need. Got lots of stuff to take apart clean adjust and re install. Gotta get to the charging situation and get that fixed. But I think it's worth it.. seems like a good old horse. 6 10
