Soaking time.  I do not want to chance something getting broken in the 20 ton press..the hub, the axle, the press or me....:P

I did try pounding some to push the hub in...nada....

Somebody left a couple qts of Mercon here a long time ago.  no Fords in my future so that some acetone and we shall see what happens

New throttle cable to replace broken one. Snapped mid cable...:confusion-confused:

Only 38 years out of that cable... just can’t get good stuff these days...:ROTF:

Cleaned air filter and carb.

Gassed up and oiled, ready for the wee bit of snow that is reported on the SNOWMAGEDDON weather forecasts tonight and tomorrow... 5-7” forecast and you can rest assured from news reports that the end is near...

At least I can go out riding in :wh: style...!

I made my own impeller kit out of spare mud flaps off a truck. Put them on a toro 11/32 walk behind (same bucket, gearbox and impeller as the 44") and it threw the snow a country mile.

Beautiful Video I could watch that puppy all day long!   Thanks

I took Horsey-2 (1988 312-8) out for its inaugural ride on my new property. It's been unseasonably warm and wet here in Western NY for January- so there's a lot of swamp right now. I wore a chest mounted GoPro and took this video. I got stuck twice- i haven't cleared a single log yet and it's running stock turf tires. The trans sounds a little whiney under throttle so i might try flushing it with diesel and refilling with some full synthetic gear oil. She fired RIGHT up though and didn't want much choke- not bad for 35 degree weather!

It's going to be epic this summer once the ground is dry and i've done some proper trail making. I plan to give this one a pulley swap and 26" ATV tires out back to bump the top speed and make the lower gears more useful for recreational riding. right now i only use 2 and 3 high- used 1H once to crawl over a pile of rocks. She's got good clearance- it'll be better with bigger tires (19x7x8 up front on stock spindles should level it out).

26 " tires might be a little too much on the back of a 312-8 without modifications.. Here is a picture of 25" tires they measure a true 25". I did raise the rear fender 1 3/4"

Turned out that we got done at the Secretary of State's office a little sooner than we expected today.  We got our paperwork filed to make our 'alternate location' our 'primary location'.  We are Michigan residents now and the Missouri property is now in project status instead of residence status.

I had a little shop time for the Wheel Horse today.  Got the rear Tach-a-Matic off and more accurately measured for my receiver hitch project.

We still need to go back to our Missouri property to keep that project moving along.  While I am there, I'll get the receiver hitch CADDed up and, eventually, fabbed.  If everything works out, I'll post a PDF file of my drawings.

From what I gather 26" would require the fender to be raised and also the foot rest tins moved forward a bit. How about width? I have my eyes on ITP mud lite xl tires and they have 25x10-12, 26x9-12, and 26x10-12 among other sizes. I'm thinking that last one should work, given the stock turf tires are 22x9.50-12. I'm hoping at low psi the 26" ATV tires stand a little shorter and are closer to true 25"

I sometimes wonder if tires are sized by the maker standing back about 4 yards and guessing.

Obviously we all know they vary a lot. The only way to find out is buy and try.

Perhaps you can get them from a place that easily takes returns/swaps?

Reminds me of a soup I had in Graz, Austria a few years ago.   Swines Axle Soup ….It was basically a bowl of warm lard with an entire pigs foot (axle) sitting in the middle.

I did my best to consume it so as not to upset my host.     May be you should put your soup on simmer for a ew days Paul.

And the chops, lions, sausage, ham,  and bacon are OK also.:banana-dreads:

Can you see if the key lines up with the set screw looking in the tapped hole?  If the key has wore to the side of the hole, the press would need to broach the groove all the way out.  If you can see that is the case, then the hub will need to be rotated to the correct alignment before pressing.

Looking in the keyway setscrew hole you can see the clean circle cut in the key by the setscrew...Looks undisturbed.  Looking from the end of the hub the key looks centered in the keyway slot of the hub.

Did you try pressing in the opposite direction to see if it will move a bit?

While I had it standing up in the vice to look in the hub key way I wapped a few time with a sledge.  No super hard but sharply.  no movement.I had a bit of padding under the spline end of the axle.  I am a bit hesitant ot press on the splined end of the axle. do not want to mess up the splines.  I actually have a spare NOS hub but no spare axle so if something has to get damaged....

I agree with protecting the axle, perhaps you could use a piece of copper or aluminum and put in the press.

Have you ever tried putting the axle in the oven warming it and then soaking it then once it's cool put it in the freezer get it very cold then try pressing it. I found as the metal cools after heating it creates a suction and pulls in the penetrating solution. Then freezing it shrinks the metal ever so slightly then it breaks the bond of rust
