My son is so happy. I’m pretty relieved as well. From what we can tell it was just bad grounding from the block to the Chevy points bracket. Although we installed a new ignition switch(because the old one was smoking when we were cranking it... lol), new spark plug, cleaned up the valves and the head. Now it actually starts right away, not like before when it had to crank for a few revolutions before firing off. Good that you installed a new ign switch. You may want to run some extra ground wires as well... Insurance, sort of.

When I originally resurrected this machine I sanded the block and chassis and ran a ground wire. Should I do another spot as well?

Should I do another spot as well? The body of the voltage regulator should be well grounded. Also that Chevy module should have an extra wire if it vibrates a lot. I have an extra ground from my volt gauge. Another from battery neg to engine block. Can't have too many grounds.... Unless the tractor starts looking like a pile of spaghetti...
Tractorhead 9,064 #2904 Posted August 20, 2019 @ebinmaine you‘re right. sensfully is, to wire all grounds like a star, to one centerpoint. so it‘s shure all grounds has same potential. good conduction ( clean wires and mountingspoints) and connectors on the wires are also highly recommanded 👍

We use salt on the roads, have a humid climate much of the time, and live near the salty ocean. I was told when much younger that if ALL the grounds are in the same place they ALL go bad at the same time. If they're separated into a loop with multiple connections there's a better chance of getting a decent one somewhere... I've often thought doing that Also creates a lot more work and potential for more problems... I honestly don't know which works better but that's how I was taught. 4 hours ago, Tractorhead said: good conduction ( clean wires and mountingspoints) and connectors on the wires are also highly recommanded I use sealed connectors and/or a short piece of heat shrink tubing at the end of all wires, even grounds. Without the seal I've seen corrosion in as little as 2 years. Patriot horse was assembled 3 years ago (not by me)and it has had issues already. That'll be up for a re-wiring soon. 8ntruck 7,018 #2908 Posted August 20, 2019 We took a short road trip and met Pullstart today. He had a 42" RD mower deck we came to a deal on. He has a few more $$$ and I have a the deck I was looking for, so we are both happy. Kevin - my wife and I enjoyed the tour of your collection. The 'new' (to me, anyhow) deck needs a little work, but no more than my current SD deck does, so another project goes on the list. 2

I’m glad you took the time to see my junk, and I’m glad you found the deck you were in need of! I was thinking I’d look for just one more tractor, but a trip to the parts store for brakes ate up the cash right quick.

His Collection consists of a bunch of mutts put together with a rosebud and a coat hanger for welding wire! The only reason we keep him around is he does have half @$$ed mechanical skills, knows how to use a BFH and he brings decent booze to tractor shows! 1

Pullstart 62,916 #2915 Posted August 21, 2019 I am tinkering with my favorite 953, Hot Wheels tonight. I tweaked the choke a bit to help with cold starts... but now that it’s warm I have to wait until tomorrow to see if I did accomplish anything... and the governor seemed to let it run away a bit once in a while, so I double checked that too. All seems good enough for who it’s for!

We need someone with good AutoCAD skills to draw us a perspective on what that would look like! Hopefully nothing like the final couple of vertical engine lawn mowers that they made following the demise of the xi series.

peter lena 8,637 #2918 Posted August 21, 2019 hello bertie, glad to see you getting after that fuel issue, since i have been regularly adding a couple of ounces of STA BIL gas treatment at every fuel top off , i have had ZERO FUEL ISSUES , i have 3 horses and they all run very well without carb problems . its relatively cheap to use and add , but has really cleaned out any fuel issues. thank you for the pictures, is that diesel power on the other horse ? looks interesting , pete
