What have you done to your Wheel Horse today?

Recommended Posts

@Tractorhead if you are talking about the “land wheel”, “depth wheel”, or “gauge wheel” (to use a few of the popular names for it)...the one Dad used on his plow was actually the front wheel off of the first riding lawn mower that he ever used. His dad bought a :wh: REO in 1965 that looked about like this...

EA25C52E-F55F-4FBF-A9BC-5A00E4594D01.png.7c0e7300115af906fc78ebf61c75239a.png

it got used and abused for about 20 years and eventually junked. However my uncle had held on to some of the usable parts including the wheels. When he saw what Dad was building, he brought up one of those front wheels.  And yes, I believe that it has greasable bearings in it.  (The storyman strikes again :D)

Looks good Andy!  Thanks for sharing the cool video.  Lots of fun using the tillage equipment on our horses to upkeep a food plot, garage,  or prep an area in the lawn to reseed.  Regardless of the need, these little tractors are up to the task and super fun to use.

:text-goodpost: Looks like you guys had a great time imin the woods “horsin” around.  I especially like that last picture of both horses pulling their loads.  Trina’s tractor turned out so good and the Patriot horse is always cool 😎 Glad that the splitter works like you had hoped as well.  Thanks for sharing the :text-coolphotos:

My honey, me, and our puppy dog, spent some time in the woods today.

We wanted to test out the splitter after getting it reassembled yesterday. That went quite well. Very satisfied.

We also worked on expanding the path system that we've been building in the forest.

We cleared a spur between two existing paths so as to be able to access the left side of the forest with the tractors.

Absolutely love being out there!

So here's the thing.....

Yes it does!

But sometimes we get more than we bargain for.

Look at the lowest pic.

See the stone wall in the background?

Roughly 2-1/2 feet tall.

We average about 3 feet of snow base by the end of every year.

See the gas grill by the house?

5 feet tall.

2 seasons ago that was down in the circle next to the stone wall.

We snowshoed right over the top of it!!

Forgot it was there until the black cover started to show the next day in/ near one of the footprints.

Bought a set of front wheel weights for the  68 Commando plow tractor,  and painted them red.  Once the paint hardens up, and I set the tractor up for winter I'll snap some pictures.

This is the first fall that we have had a functional bagger tractor in the household...boy it is nice with the growing maple and ash trees on our property.

The more that I use JackRabbit, the more I like him. Good multipurpose machine for Caleb.  Right now I have the benefit of having both of them in my household:thumbs:

The emerald ash borer insect is not quite here in Maine either.

We still have all of our ash trees but they're figuring 3 to 5 years and that won't be so anymore.

Have 5 big Ash trees that need to come down soon. Seems they've been dying from insects over the last 3 years and now they're becoming dangerous.

Anyone have a wood lathe and want to make baseball bats?

I hope Louisville Slugger is stock piling Ash.  Some how the clank of an Aluminum bat just doesn't do it for me

Mine are 25’ tall or less, it makes me sad to think that in a handful of years they could get wiped out.:(  my property was a  corn field 18 years ago when I first went to look at it. Today it has about 200-250 trees of various species on it some that we planted and others that God did through the process of nature that He set up.  In either case, we are really enjoying them now that we have real shade and can have a functioning 1/2 acre woods

Some pics playing with the kids in the backyard around said trees last week...

Most of the above trees are only about 10 years old but this summer when full of leaves, it was finally beginning to feel like a “REAL” woods albeit a small one!

Sadly can't do anything, because no engine no Fun.😢

Today after Work i driven to my friend, to disassembled the Engine at his side.

Because lack of time of both, i made no Pic's today, sorry. We are both in a hurry.

The Result was:

The Enginehead has a rip, also the Cylinder has a rip both about 1cm long.

I have abosutely no idea, how this coud be happen.

Even a closer investigation on Saturday of the drain shows, it was primary oil but with a plenty of gasoline. 😞

That was the strong smell - 5W30 Oil is damn thin - however.

I think maybe once it was a fault on careburator fuel valve, while running engine a bit over idle speed.

Looklike maybe a hit from to much gasoline, like water in the engine - and Bam...

or maybe a light damage from the fire in the past, what is now released while Engine was running - who knows.😳

i just remembering of the oilsmoke, the Engine has strongest while fireing up,

when the Engine was warm a bit of Oilsmell was happen, but no visible smoke, that directs me to the intakevalve seal.

Maybe the Oilsmoke was a first sign abouth the actual situation and i just missinterpret the oilsmoke as a defect intakevalve seal.

how ever - things gona happen and i reserved allready at Friday a new Engine as Plan B.

Then i started to find a good used Engine, but no hope at all or completley horrable Prices

Example (5 year old B&S 12HP used for 840 bucks - not really, can not be truth)

I think a lot about repair or exchange pros and cons and discuss with my Buddy and he also meant - who knows, when this Issue was initiated by the fire or firedistinguisher what was the next problem im runnig into with this Engine.

After we see what's all happen with the Engine, i give the Enginedealer a call about the Price of Engine on his Website,

i'll try to Bargain a bit and he give me a different Offer -

a Brandnew 12,5 HP Engine complete swappable for just 390 bucks incl. Transfer to my side.

It was a Loncin Brand, as i know, the Company build also Motorcycle Engines for BMW, not the worsest Issue,

so bad can the Quality not been, and for that Price - i'll think it's worth a try.😎

So new Engine is actual still on the Way and i prepare in Background the Swap.

Byebye Onan, it was a honor for me - and Thanks for such a lot of Fun we have, in the short Timeline.😢

Our ash trees are gone here in western Pennsylvania.   I've been cutting down the 35 that we used to have in our backyard over the past couple years.   It's a shame to see how fast they went.  Once you get woodpeckers working over the trees to get at the Ash Borer Beetle larvae, the tree is toast. If cut right away after it dies the trees still make good lumber.  The firewood is excellent, too.  If you wait too long after they die, the tree gets brittle and the hinge wood snaps if you have to "pull" the tree while felling it.  It's best to use heavy guide ropes and wedge the tree across a FLAT felling cut.

Cheers!

Dave

While Engine swap will be made, i would also try to seperate clutch and Brake and even Hydraulic pump by a seperate added pulley.

Pulley's ordered, hope they will arrive soon.

Additionally i found a left Pedal from a WH GT14 via * bay what seems to fit to my Pedalshaft.

It arrives today from USA and after measurement it seems clear - yes it fit's.

I added a grease fitting M6 shortthread what fit's perfectly without piercing to shaft.

Will do this also on the right side Pedal too.

Is that a satin finish on the 657? It’s got a great look!
