Today, after work,  I’m waiting on parts for the engine project. So, I installed the 312 gas tank I got from @ebinmaine on my 308. As any of you who deal with the 300/400/500 series know it was a plug and play deal, and looks like it belongs there. Now just to plumb it.

Between 5-10” of snow tommorow into Monday morning, this week got the c-145 mechanically ready. Replaced the belt, hydro fluid, hydro filter, pto bell and bearing got fully greased. And got some new tires for it. Also flipped the scraper blade on the 48” plow on my C-121(Which really needed it just see the picture :lol:). Then today hooked the blower to the C-145. Lubed that. Fueled up. Then C-121 fired it up sprayed the blade as well as the blower with silicone lubricant. Fueled that up. And we are ready! Bring it on snow! We will see what we get.

I over tightened the set screw, but after looking at the remaining part of the hub, we decided that it was already cracked to begin with but a combination of overtightening the set screw and driving it pretty rough over some ice to have some fun probably is what made it break the rest of the way.

It is also an inch hub. We also had wheelweights and the plow mounted so that added extra weight.

I'd agree that it was likely pre-cracked. 

You tightening the set screw shouldn't have been enough to break the hub.

As far as tightening a set screw, the torque rating is the standard found on internet charts.  

I have a habit of tightening and loosening any set screw several times to let it grab better.  

 

Also ...  ALWAYS use a new set screw. 

The ones in these tractors are often decades old and past usage.

I think you're right about the set screw being pretty old because it was on an 854 that we got spring of last year and we are kind of thinking it ran a much rougher life than our 702 which we have had since the 80's  I think but even before that, it was our next door neighbors who bought it new so we had access to it occasionally. We think this because of a multitude of reason be the main reasons are that it had a very bent up tool box when we got it, it sounds like death in reverse, the hood is all boogered up with holes and a few ground down welds, and when I took the hubs off(which was pretty easy because it has leaky axle seals), I cleaned them up in our parts cleaner but when I was taking them off I notice that they had the keyway on the hub wallered out to about half an inch but the axle keyway was fine, so I replaced the woodruff keys and was hoping for the best, the next days or so when we were getting ready to plow, I had made sure I got the bolts tight enough which lead to it breaking. It wasn't until later in the evening until it broke and that was when we were getting ready to put it away but we put it in reverse to put it away and the left wheel fell off. After that, we pushed the tractor into the garage and the next day we took the plow off and pushed the 854 over to the work garage while watching to make sure the wheel didn't fall off. Right now we have it up on jackstands because we don't have a replacement hub but we were hoping to get the super strong hub to replace them but they only have one in stock at the moment. Yesterday I drove our 1257 over to the work garage to take the hubs off of it to put on the 854 but after looking at the shaft for a minute I realized it looked bigger so I got a caliper and realized that the 1257 has 1 1/8 inch axel so unfortunately, the 854 stands undriveable a little longer.

Where are you looking? 

Perhaps one of our Redsquare vendors has one?

 

I may even have a spare here.  

 

The hubs from an 80s 308, 310 and some 312 would be the thicker type.  

 

 

Sounds like you have quite the long history with Wheelhorses!!

We have been looking on a-z, marketplace, and fleabay, but the one listing on marketplace we found is for 1 1/8 inch hubs, the only ones I have found on fleabay is the strong ones(which are more expensive one fleabay compared to a-z, and on a-z they don't have any of the 1 inch 5 lug hubs in stock, and from the brief lookings in the classifieds, I haven't seen any for sale.

Here are the torques for the set screw, retaining nuts, and wheel bolts for a 520.

Good swap. Limited Slip Differential is very beneficial.  

 

Lincoln may have that.

We were also wanting it for the low gear selection and because more torque can really improve some things.
