I could e sworn it said something a long the lines of v twin on the column, it has no engine in it currently. It's just what I thought I saw on the column.

This is the 1600 but the decal was the same. These tractors pretty much predated small v-twin OHC (non-motorcycle) engines.

I do know that it's hydrostatic. Is the 1600 hydrostatic?

Check out this thre4ad from the very beginning, anything you want to know about your tractor will be covered in it.

The 1600 was a manual transmission, the 1800 was a hydrostatic

It was supposed to happen this year…my fault it’s not done.

Who wants to guess what these are? Keep the responses PG please... :)

Today I was going to mount my new Deestones on my 520 wheels. Apparently the PO used slime in one wheel, and it was a terrible mess. The slime had been in there long enough to harden, and those little balls were all in the tire. I found no damage to the wheel, and no rust. That being said the tire had begun to delaminate inside. Other than some checking outside, it was ok. Not sure if the slime broke down the tire or not, but it certainly looked that way.

Took a while to clean that wheel up, but those Deestones are the hardest tire to mount up I've ever attempted. I finally gave up and will take them to a tire shop. I've mounted more tires than I can remember, and these were horrible. Maybe it's the cooler temps combined with thicker ply, but it simply would not go on the wheel.

:text-welcomeconfetti:to the :rs:The 520 HC is a very capable machine.      20HP Onan engine with the Eaton 1100 transmission and high speed differential.

There are many posts on the forum detailing the positive and negatives of the 520s.  Overheating of the rear cylinder is one of the concerns.  If you haven't all ready done it, I suggest you inspect and if necessary clean the cooling fins on the engine.   Best to remove the tins to do this.

I would also suggest you start a new introductory thread for you and your 520HC.   Post tend to get lost in this general thread.    May be one of the moderators will move it for you.    @Sparky ??  Can this be done Mike?

Thanks. I'm slowly removing all the panels and coverings to repaint, so I'll give it a good wash out and scrub the cooling fins.

I tried to put the head back on, but I couldn't find the bolts.

With the panels off and BEFORE you scrub it, look for any indication of an oil leak around the oil filter base plate.  There are two small bolts fastening it to the block.  If these bolts are not properly torqued, the gasket will seep oil and be blown across the cooling fins making a sticky mess that attracts the grass clippings clogging the fins.    It may not be a problem, but this is the time to replace the gasket.

Also, make sure you have the grommet that seals the oil filter to the panels.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding, @Ed Kennell’s word “tins” is referring to the metal shrouds on the engine, not the metalwork of the tractor body. It is no picnic removing and then remounting them on the Onans (enjoy the, but DON’T drop, the one bolt underneath the ignition coil, or the two bolts that are reached up through holes in the engine mounting plate on the flywheel side, and also disconnecting/reconnecting the fuel pump pulse feed hose 😄) but it is an absolute must for a new-to-you tractor to check for obstructions and oil filter seal leakage.

As an engineer I can appreciate the compact design.

As a weekend mechanic, I can't stand the compact design that is impossible to maintain!

You'll know I've been beaten when the next photo I post is a paint job done with paintball guns at high noon.

This is the main reason my Other Half and I like the older rigs.

Older is better.

I drive a 100 Series Landcruiser, dragging a 1990 Wheelhorse 520, to cut the grass with my Shindaiwa 270t line trimmer, after cutting my firewood with a Stihl 038 Magnum!

So I picked up my first Wheelhorse 520-HC about a year ago after seeing it online for a reasonable price.
