BrianKoch 307 #20829 Posted February 11 (edited) Gentlemen, Today I lapped the head (100-150-220) on the ‘69 Charger while I wait for parts for the ‘68. This was my first time and I think it turned out ok. Before I reassemble, should I do something about the surface rust that’s developed on the engine blocks mating surface? There’s also a little bit on the carb mating surface. Edited February 11 by BrianKoch 3

Usually I use a brass brush (not steel) to clean up the surface a bit. Get a shop vac handy to suck up as much debris as possible as you do the cleaning. 20 minutes ago, BrianKoch said: There’s also a little bit on the carb mating surface. Same vacuum procedure but with a sharp small putty knife or some 240 to 300 grit sandpaper.
pfrederi 17,729 #20831 Posted February 11 Something is wrong with your breather set up. it should be flat across not depressed in the center and the red rubber spacer should be inside and not visible. 4
BrianKoch 307 #20833 Posted February 11 (edited) Oops, thanks for pointing that out. I had tightened too much. Just pulled it off and flattened the best I could… My original picture wasn’t too clear and that’s actually a red painted bolt head. Thanks for posting the diagram —I double checked and everything is where it should be. Heck, when I pulled it apart the first time, it was missing the reed and the gaskets were long gone (no wonder it ran terribly and leaked). This ‘69 is definitely teaching me new things! BrianKoch 307 #20834 Posted February 16 (edited) Gentlemen, Today I replaced the motion control linkage seal and changed the transmission fluid on the ‘68 Charger 12. No more leak! Edited February 17 by BrianKoch 8
Cody 276 #20835 Posted February 17 Picked this little guy up last night, I didn't really need another 854 but I can't pass up a unmolested round hood. Drove a few hours for it but it was worth it, met another wheel horse enthusiasts who was a really nice guy, he even threw in a snow plow for it. I have to dig out a set of 6-12 tires out of the barn for it and see if It'll run. Should be a nice project 4

Down here in NC, roundhoods are unicorns. You still see Suburban and Rangers occasionally, but "full size" roundhoods are dried up. Heck, just a regular barn find of any flavor is pretty rare these days. Good looking tractor too BTW. I always loved the 753/ 854 machines!
Treepep 564 #20837 Posted February 17 I didn't really need another 854 but I can't pass up a unmolested round hood. Forgive my igornance... Is that a new seat or a cover. Looks great either way. Zero round hoods round this way!

Cody 276 #20839 Posted February 17 Yes It's a new cover, unfortunately the seat pan under it isn't correct so I'll be digging through the barn for the right one. The gentleman I bought it from was starting to fix it up but he couldn't get it to run. I'm pretty sure the starter generator is getting weak, it turns the engine over slow, so I'll order a rebuild kit for that and go from there. Round hoods are getting harder to find here too and when I saw it wasn't all cut up I knew I had to save it. I'm supposed to be thinning out the herd not adding to it lol at least I have a tractor supporting wife

And yes, it's nice to have a supportive wife with this hobby. Of course I have to test mine occasionally with gas fumes or paint smells just for fun....

Last time we counted there was 70ish tractors floating around here. Not all wheel horses but most are. There's a few farmalls, a ford, and some john deeres in the mix too 😅 5
