Smaller gap retards the timing, Larger gap advances timing.

Thanks for making this connection.

Since the spark happens when the points OPEN and a larger gap opens sooner, it advances the timing.

When I bought this tractor I remember tightening the set screws on the hub. Now since they are loose again I guess I’ll replace them.

Replace the set screws? Or the whole hub?

I've gotten in the habit the last few years of not reusing ANY set screws unless it's one we put on.

Too many people think they're a permanent piece and/or flatten the bottom cup.

Beautiful tractor!  Is that a harbor freight lift? Great set up.

@ebinmaine I never thought of just replacing the set screws? I might give that a try, it’s certainly cheaper than replacing the hubs!

@paulyv56 Yes it’s a Harbor freight lift that I made a wider top for. I have to say that it’s one of the best tools I’ve ever bought. Having a bad back, it’s a real game changer. Being able to stand up and work and not bent over or on my knees or back is a huge help. I got it on sale for around $600 bucks.

If you have loose hubs you need to replace the keys too. If the hub is moving around the key is worn.

@PWL216 There’s two brackets that go from the top of the box to the rear axle hitch and then a 1/2” bolt that goes through the drawbar hitch. I’ve seen similar but not the same one.

McMaster Carr on the set screws @c-series don. When I broach hubs for guys I aways send new ones & jam nuts so I buy in bulk.

Just as an alternative source. Here's where I found some.

Love McMaster but these were less expensive and still great quality.

How's their shipping? That's where McMaster sticks it to me.

Can't say I recall the specifics but the total was lower.

I try to use McMaster Carr and Bolt Depot 🔩  when I have a decent amount to order.

Keep a running list for each.
