Hopefully I'm not wrong, but it wasn't expensive. And hopefully it's stable enough without using the brace and I'll just cut that part off. If not, I'll fabricate a brace of some kind, I guess. Or try something else. Dave you'll be pretty happy with the low tone of that muffler. I'll be curious to see exactly what sort of header pipe you invent. Any pics of that would be appreciated. I'd really recommend using a brace rod. Even on a fairly smooth running twin there'll be a fair amount of vibration constantly trying to remove the muffler for you. Got it at a garage sale, sat in the garage for years, same part numbers too These are nice too... 5

Also agree on no brace needed for a short piece of iron pipe out of a cast iron engine such as yours. My concern for a twin is that a sheet metal header would be no where near as strong as a black iron pipe. On those chrome tipped mufflers you show... What's the gloss paint used ? WHGuy413 2,693 #17582 Posted November 6, 2022 I didn’t do much with the horses today. In prep for the eventual winter (75 degrees today) The boys each towed some of their project mowers out to the back lot. Alex with the new B-100 and Aiden with his 856. I did have to help Alex when the fuel pump died on the B-100 in the back yard. Ended up gravity feeding the carb while I walked next to him holding the gas tank up in the air to get it back. Opened the fuel pump and it’s a huge mess. It definitely had water in it at one point.

My concern for a twin is that a sheet metal header would be no where near as strong as a black iron pipe. In my case, I'm intending to keep the sheet metal on the flang/header as short as possible, and merge into black iron as soon as possible. Maybe 3-4 inches. I think since there's 2 of them, and they originally held a horizontal muffler (yeah, maybe that had a brace on it too), I think they will be strong enough. I guess I could rethink this and just go with enough of a "stub" from the flange to weld up to black iron, or maybe figure out a way to weld black iron directly onto the flange, but my welding skills are mediocre at best....
8ntruck 7,014 #17585 Posted November 7, 2022 @ebinmaine the muffler on my C-195 is 4" in diameter, and the can is about 8" long. The input pipe on top of the muffler has a 90 degree bend that puts the centerline of the pipe about 2 1/4" above the top of the can. The end of the elbow is about 4 1/4" from the centerline of the can. The input pipe of the muffler slides over the end of the header, so that leaves the end of the header about 3" from the center line of the muffler.

oliver2-44 9,756 #17588 Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) I’m going to try plastic welding the crack in the top of this tank from the Raider 12 I swapper parts for. This is my second plastic welding adventure. The red cup is stamped HDPE which I think is the right plastic to use as weld filler. My $19 Harbor Freight welding tool and red plastic strip filler. No the prettiest, but seemed to melt together OK. I didn’t get 100% depth penetration as I can still feel the crack offset on the bottom side. Time will tell how it holds. I think the spacing is the same as the KT 17. Again, the stable is dark. I'll check tomorrow. I'll have to pull a heat shield to get that dimension - should not be an issue, as I've had it off not too long ago. The current muffler is more or less vertical in front of the engine with the exhaust pipe exiting the left side of the tractor. I suppose I could go with dual vertical stacks......
