What have you done to your Wheel Horse today?

Recommended Posts

elcamino/wheelhorse

Drained and replaced oil in the 312-8 and C-120 , removed deck from 312-8 and gave it the greasy Pete oil bath. Left deck on the c-120 just in case. Did not grease anything , but it is on the list of things to do. Waldomobile kept calling but it did not get any attention today. Cleaned and put stuff away in tractor section of shed so I can remove rear wheels on 312-8 and tube them.

Didn’t that thing almost kill you?

Also how much do you think you’ve carried with that

Yup. But it works great so I’m just a little more careful than I used to be. I’ve easily had over 1000 pounds in big stones and rocks in it.

Word to live by there...

I have a 17 cubic foot trailer here. VERY easy to load well over a grand in weight.  Important to remember to keep the load size down.

Dunno if you guys have ever seen my trailer that was made out of a golf cart frame...

That 'ting is heavy... but my L-157 pulls it along like nuthin'

Mine pull this one loaded like it’s nothing too. But stopping could be an issue. Thankfully I’ve never had a problem stopping them. Well except for when I hit some ice going down hill. The snow bank at the bottom of the path stopped us.

Thanks! My grandfather owned this tractor and did the conversion. He gave it to me when I got my house. I have a twin to it in my 12 Automatic. My dad did the conversion on that one. The 12 auto was my very first wheel horse.

I'm a bit of a fan of those engines. I'd of course prefer a cast iron Kohler, but they have gotten scarce around here. Especially true for 14-16 hp flavors.

Whatever it takes to keep these old tractors working, right?

I grew up on my dads 12 Auto. I vaguely remember running it at our first house. I do remember him tearing it completely apart one winter in the basement of our new house fully painting everything and adding the 18hp to it because the 12 was “tired” still not sure what that meant to this day. I prefer the old kohlers but wouldn’t trade these 2 for anything. When my grandfather passed I found the original 14hp Kohler in his stuff. Don’t know what is wrong with it. I don’t want to swap the 18 out. Maybe someday I find something that needs a motor and put the 14 to work again.

If you do, be sure to pull the balance gears out. Otherwise as long as it has oil, it should last forever.

I personally am impressed with the power of my Vanguards. The governor response is faster than any other engine I have. You almost never get the "surge" under load like most other engines.

I agree the power is great. I can mow my lawn at 3/4 throttle and run my big 2 stage blower in deep wet snow without any issues. Rarely ever bogging down.

I’m pulling the WHRat’s front genny apart today.

The small chain helped at the races, so no theft happened.  It was simply wrapped around a bunch and zip tied together in an inconspicuous place

I have a 18 HP Vanguard in my C-120 If you over load the deck and stall it, you better get the PTO disingaged fast if you don't want to replace the belts.

I can see that engine eating belts under conditions like that. I’ve never had a situation to over load my deck or stall the tractor. But I’m sure there are some. I can see a fully plugged up bound up snow blower causing this issue too maybe.

Look carefully at the chain... the size of those links :scared-eek:... most guys on this site will look no further, take the challenge and try to figure out how to cut the chain with various power tools, implements, attachments and design schemes (posting most for us to critique) before they'd grab some wire cutters to snip the zip ties... :ROTF:

Held on with zip ties are they?

See there's the difference between me n Trina.

SHE would simply reach to her pocket and grab the knife she always carries and vvvipp off goes the plastic.

ME on the other hand... I'd unbolt the whole &)@($#  tractor before I'd THINK about looking for a zip tie.

Common sense vs brute strength.
