Considering you have little experience I would say this turned out great.

Might not be 'instagram-worthy' welding but you 'got er dun' that all that matters.

That welding job is just fine.

You got the job done and held the pipe in place which is exactly the reasoning for using a welder in your case. That's called a win.

 

What did you use for a welder? Stick or wire feed?

Since we don't weld submarine or nuclear reactor parts, I think it's plenty good enough.

 

I'm not a welder. But I can melt two peices of steel together so they won't come apart.

Correct, they were never intended to be welded.  If you really want a welded elbow, higher priced steel elbows are available.

Wire feed, this is just a flux welder for small patch jobs.

I put a pipe wrench on it after letting it soak over night with penetrating oil and this seemed like quite the fight would be in order.  It seemed like the rust had seized it together pretty good over almost 50 years.  I didn't want to risk damaging the block with heat and quench cycles and going Hercules on the pipe wrench.  So just decided welding on the elbow joint would be the safer course of action.

I dunno Envy I had a 161 that it needed to come out. Plan A was to heat it....Plan B was saw it off close, cut the threads and collapse it. 

Put a pipe wrench on it just for grins,  proclaimed a bit of french, and came right out. Now if hubs & hitch pins came out like that! 

 

Saw Joe's cool rig at the BS last year. Said it should be a two seater....I think he said she rides in the back!

I got the two blackhoods out for the first time, the 8 speed, got a new to him M16 Kohler, still have to hook  everything up.

The hydro is apart from the beauty aspect done.

Somehow I own 2 of the 3 blackhoods I have ever seen: heard of in Belgium.

@Maxwell-8  have a black hood myself , bought it new in 82  , MODEL C-85 , coming on  40 years !  did a magnum 12 swap a few years ago , been very good , still my favorite . loads of experiments on it , to correct cronoc problems, been very solid and reliable . think ill keep it  pete

I love my „new to me“ reworked Carlift, because all things now can be made much more easier

Finally found the time and wx to pull the C-101 8-speed out of the garage and snap a few following the winter 2022 refresh. I purchased this tractor May 1996, restored it and the 42" side discharge and put them to use cutting 3 of our 5 acres here in Virginia. At that time I decided to bump up the HP with a 12.  She performed flawlessly for 10 years until I retired her to pulling a 5 x 8 trailer hauling fallen limbs & debris to our burn pile and purchased the Kubota B7800 with 72" belly deck.  Most folks here where I live in Virginia had never heard of Wheel Horse tractors.  Snapper & JD were always big names here.

Pre Engine rebuild I might of given it all I had just to see what happens.  But the rebuild is complete at this point so I chickened out

Picked up the new  NAPA axle seal and oil filter.      The filter is longer than the WH, but the extra length actually makes it easier to get a wrench on.

 

The new seal is only 1/4" thick and doesn't have a rolled flange on the inner side of the outer metal ring.   A little concerned about keeping the seal perfectly square to the shaft when starting the thin edge in the bore.

 

 

I taped over the keyway and the flat that I filed on for the second set screw, and the seal slid right on.

 

   I was searching for a correct size pipe or washers to use as a tool to keep it square as it is tapped into the housing,,,,,,,Then I saw the perfect tool....the axle hub made the perfect slide hammer to tap the seal in place.

 

Using the straw for an air vent speeds up the oil filling process and elimenates the burping.      Also, If you use the dip stick to mark the straw, you can set the bottom of  the straw to the full oil elevation.    When the oil level reaches the end of the straw, the oill stops flowing and starts to belch.

 

Of course after running to fill the new filter  and operating the lift cylinder,  I needed to add another quart.

 

Back in operation,   I tilled the garden again,   removed the tiller and installed the 42" SD deck and mowed some right o ways.     All is well ...no leaks.
