My son has talked me into running it until it lets loose. He has a way of doing that....besides...he has a 418 A too...

Then I will put the shelf 18M on it I got a ways back from Ray in Conn. He talked me out of tossing it, and if and when it craps out, I will part it out...Muffler, chrome shield.  .Carb, intake , Coil, Flywheel....all the desirable parts.....Tins ,etc..... I was looking for a few bucks for it if I let it go complete, as is.

I guess that you removed the belt guard and checked the pulley, the hardware and the belt?

Have you pulled the flywheel and checked for loose magnets?  That could explain clicking noises.

I did...all good in / at flywheel...and charging perfect. I also have been told that it may be a valve spring and or something in the area under the cover. It is for sure not a rotating mass issue....it is a far less deep sound..

.So I will continue to investigate. Any other ideas??? I did pull the belt guard and removed the belts...PTO...and any accessories.

Thanks for the replies so far.....

Can that be achieved with the M18? by cranking???

I was always under the assumption that you cant ...due to decompression release on them....Maybe Im wrong???   I do have several Compression testers...Hmmmm

I don't think there's an ACR on Kohler twins.

I found that compression leak down works the best. I did this on my 418-A last fall when it was hard starting and found that it needed a valve job. I did the valve job and have a small ticking noise on the front cylinder, but knew I probably would as I got a little aggressive on one of the valve stems and the clearance is a little more than it should be.

This would at least help isolate if it’s something in the valve train.

Before and after pics of the leak down compression.

Spent over 1 hour on FaceTime today as “WH tech support” with my sister in KY that I got the 417-A for a few months back. My other sister from IN was visiting her and they decided to tackle installing the tiller. I think in the end it was a good time had by all especially me since I didn’t have to do any heavy lifting and in the end, the garden plot got it’s first till. I let them know that I was proud of them and they should be proud of themselves because in my opinion, this is the hardest WH attachment to install and it only gets easier.

Paul as compared to other WH's 3,4 500 series what makes it possible to use the taller rear tires? How much difference in the frame etc.? I only owned 1 and it was for a very short time.

Any Ideas for the Eddie Tractor????

Back on the 520H, I busted the brake lever off of the shaft when I removed it. thought I could run a die on the shaft and double nut a lever in place. I over tightened the lock nut and snapped the shaft off at the old pinhole. Not thinking the shaft is pretty soft and I ended up welding a bolt on in it's place and it all worked out good. I like it because I can locate the lever where I want it up, or level.

Put seat pan on with new lights and the seat, looking okay. Got to dig out a deck and might start the season with it to make sure it runs good. Thinking it may have to go cause room is at a  premium...... not sure yet.

I had an air cleaner base screw fall down into the intake(it was there from previous owner “repair”) and embed into the piston. It ran but didn’t sound to great. Made my good deal sour quickly. Maybe a loose valve seat?

If it's a Magnum, maybe check the magneto clearances on the flywheel. I've seen dirt daubers and mice make a mess in those areas- and there isn't much room to spare.

For those that ever wondered why a hydro tractor doesn't do well with a tiller, this video should answer all your questions.

I haved used both manuals and hydros with a tiller. While I agree that a manual is better with a tiller for consistent ground engagement, once she figures out how to handle the forward control while being pushed by the tiller, she’ll be fine and it’ll get the job done. Plus the tiller is easier to raise and lower with the hydro. Also, this was her first attempt at using the tiller, and with all the other attachments that she has, the hydro works better over all.

They will miss if the valves are too tight.

Pull the valve covers and check for proper clearance between valve stem and tappet.  Proper compression is between  90-120 psi according to the manual.

for tilling I like it better.

I have found that these machines are powerful and weight in all four corners helps alot with both gear and hydro when tilling.
