Didn't actually do anything to my horses today, but I did read an article in April's issue of Hot Rod about prepping for paint.  But, since I am planning to paint the C195 hood this year, it was time well spent.  Changed my mind about how I was going to strip the paint.

So what’s your plan… paint stripper ?

I'm curious as well.

We'll be working on the 417A project more today.

Is there something particular you're avoiding?

Trying something new?

@Chestnut years back , we had a 27 " snow fall in April , that you don't forget , but our weather has been favoring the coast blow by direction , so  you get what you get ,  question on the onan , FEL , ever consider adding some vent holes on the belt guard , to help that rear cylinder cooling ?  lots of related pictures on site . like  this , pete

Today me and 857 lover ( Dylan ) are gonna take our horses out in the snow and ride around. He’s gonna test out his newly swapped trans and I’m gonna see how my super lugs are in the snow. :happy-partydance:

I've seen a few of the threads about adding vent holes and I'm considering it.

As for the early and late season storms, I've lived them. Trying to forget, but I was in SE New Hampshire for the April fool's storm. More vivid memories of the more recent trick or treat storm. Parts for the snowblower are due Monday and the repair won't wait. Just concerned about tearing up a muddy lawn to get to the drive  and walkway if we get a late storm.

Or just open the belt guard completely. The bracket that supports the top of the belt guard is restrictive by itself. And little holes make very little difference.

I was planning on going at it with a 60 grit flap wheel on my angle grinder.  The article in Hot Rod was saying that this will remove paint, but it typically leaves deep scratches in the base metal that require more prep work to fill.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a combination of paint remover and Scotch Brite type of abrasives.

The C195 hood is a good learning project.  Big enough to be a representative of a large panel, small enough that it is not a major project, and a piece that won't matter much if things go sideways.

I went just a little more, the guard isn't needed like on an eight speed.

This is exactly the plan for ours.

We have "abrasive sponge" type wheels for the 4" side grinder.

Be VERY attentive.

They really do work well.

Looks from here like the carb and fuel pump are blocked/masked off.

I'd do the same, or remove them. I like a plain no paint carb.

The coils I've seen both painted and not.

I can't speak for what Wheelhorse did originally across all years.

I believe that's a matter of personal preference.

If I had a coil that's all scratched up and weathered you bet I'm painting it.

Been working on hand sand planing the cylinder head for the C-160 Automatic.

You can see in the picture after me spending a fair amount of time already that the opposite corners where I put a black X still aren't even all the way out to the edge of the gasket surface...

Needed the carb cleaned

Do you replace any parts? Do they come apart without damaging the gasket?

@JCM

I didn't replace any parts on mine when I did it. Had spray and bottled carb cleaner in hand, pulled the top off and cleaned away. I used Q-tips and paper towels rather than the Dremel. Even reused the gasket. Had a kit on hand just in case it didn't go that way.

Had a little oil drip at the filter fitting.

Was the leak between the block and the filter base mounting plate?   The gasket under that plate has very little sealing area.   I always replace that gasket and torque the two bolts.

Drips there are blown across those rear colling fins where they collect grass and clog the fins inviting the notorious rear cyl valve seat problem.

My bad, hydro filter.

I've done a 4 or 5 and have not needed any parts.
