Got into many arguments on the phone when a garage called and wanted a tie rod end for an 88 "K" 1/2 ton truck and it turned out they were working on an 88 V-10.

Used to love that one. Been there. Many times.

That was one of the things I actually liked about working at the dealership environments instead of the parts stores.

 

No VIN number meant no looking up the parts.

Spotted this little gem this morning. Got some crust here 'n there ... you can see if you zoom in. 

Don't see these old square body Rangers in Maine very often anymore.

Just this morning spotted one of the new hybrid Mavericks that are the successor to these Rangers (the Ranger's demise is an interesting story of well-intended regulation having unintended consequencs).

It looks like a pretty basic truck, but nicely proportioned and the reviews have been excellent.

Trina has been eyeing those Mavericks for a year or more. 

 

Reviews have been good. Practical life experience and the amount of recalls, not so much.

 

She's decided she will not be buying one.

If Trina really wants a rock solid mini truck the Tacoma is the way to go. I’m a Ford guy but for smaller trucks you can’t beat the Yota.

Agreed in principle but she wants to do something smaller than that. Modern Tacoma is basically a full size truck of yesteryear. They're also nowhere near her desired budget range.

You got me curious so i just went through and looked at the list of recalls. Five so far, most not affecting a lot of units, and all readily resolved with a dealer visit. Yes, not the sign of a mature product but FWIW, if this was a class of vehicle that interested me, I'd still give it a close look.

The new Maverick truck reminds me of a Subaru Bratt. One piece body, front wheel drive, not really a truck, not really a car.

No, you cannot, been driving thIs one everyday for the last 8 years with not so much as a hiccup.

Above is just the beginning. 

 

Performance exhaust with split manifolds from fuel injected engines. 

Some sort of deep tone muffler. 

At some point a new high performance Schneider Camshaft. 

 

A LOT of rewiring to do. 

Remove computer (doesn't work). 

Remove all unnecessary wiring harness. 

Alternator swap to later model. More amps and less problem prone.  

 

 

Adding a pile of LED lights. 

 

Saddle blanket seat cover. 

 

The rear axle will be FULLY rebuilt with all new NOS or high quality differential, spiders, ring and pinion gears, bearings. 

New rear springs. 

While the bed is off we'll be doing a little repainting on the rear frame. 

 

Front steering system replacement parts. 

Adding a radiator shroud and possibly electric fan.  

Several gauges. 

 

Later on I'll be changing the front springs for a 2" lift set and adding 2" lift as well. 4" front total suspension lift.

My favorite muffler has been the Covair Turbo muffler.  2 1/2" inlet & exhaust, nice sound, low back pressure.  Not sure if they are still available, though.  Maybe in the aftermarket?
