19richie66 17,523 #78 Posted January 9, 2018 Must have been added and if so, nice job. Wouldn’t mind doing that to mine. I have three louvered hoods, no drain plates
PeacemakerJack 10,739 #79 Posted January 10, 2018 Caleb has one of those really nasty sick “bugs” going around and so no shop time for us last night or tonight. I wanted to work on sorting out the wiring so bad tonight but one look at him reminded me that it wasn’t fair to him to work on this project without him. So I studied over some of the info sent to me by my buddy from the Sunshine State—thanks @19richie66 for the emails! This forum has so many great guys on it and I’m enjoying getting to know more and more of you better. @pfrederi looks to me like you have a top notch customer added piece that was so well executed that it looks factory. Thank you for sharing pics and including it here. Someday when I pick up a louvered hood I’ll know where to look to get the proper plan for a tray and water evacuation tube! 1 2

I don't know as many intricate details about the later models, and don't personally have any models with louvers. I haven't been able to locate any parts manuals that show that drip tray listed. It seems I've seen a picture of that setup before... could have been here on the forum. Seems logical and illogical to me at the same time... the drip tray would keep the engine cleaner, but even with separation from the hood, the airflow restriction by covering the louvers back up negates having the louvers at all. Who knows... could have been one of those things that some left the factory that way until they realized it was more trouble than it was worth or something. 1

PeacemakerJack 10,739 #86 Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) Finally—after several weeks of down time, Caleb and I were able to carve out some time in the shop together to work on JackRabbit. Before I say anything about the project, I want to publicly thank Jeff @WVHillbilly520H for his sketch... I know it is in a couple of threads here already but when I finally showed it to Caleb he was overjoyed. Claudia was at a friends house this afternoon for a birthday party (she is the artist in the family). I couldn’t wait to see what she thought. Jeff, she thought it was awesome! When Caleb told her that I wanted the rabbit to be more gruesome looking like Rat Fink, she said, “But why? That would’ve been nasty! Jeff’s drawing is just perfect!” Well said Claudia! First up was to get the weights on the back wheels. Caleb took to that task right away while I began to study the electrical a little more. I want to install an electric fuel pump on this thing for sure. It generally makes them start so much quicker in my experience. After he had both weights on we turned our attention to the belt. Thanks @19richie66 for pointing us to this one. It was a great price for an NOS piece. I knew the old one was bad but didn’t realize how bad until we compared them. Caleb did all the disassembly and reassembly necessary to change it out at this point. Before he started, I asked him to study it over and tell me what he thought we needed to do to take it off. He actually had all the steps right except taking off the PTO actuator arm. I am proud of him—he’s turning a little more into a “grease monkey” every day! I do have one question for you guys that is fairly simple but, “what is the adjustment need to be for the little PTO brake arm?” Caleb obviously pulled it off and then reinstalled it after the new belt was in place. This tractor will get a repaint this next summer but for now, we are dealing with the mechanical/electrical issues and then getting it ready for blade duty. I tell you guys, I’m not taking this time with him for granted. I do understand that I’m going to blink and he’ll be in college. That’s a great kid right there and I’m blessed to have him gifted to me from God for this period of his life! Next up: electrical! WVHillbilly520H 10,374 #87 Posted January 22, 2018 Josh, once again you all are welcome, and tell Claudia good eye, if I recall correctly the PTO brake should be set with a feelers gauge. 020"-.025" clearance ,it's in the owner's manual and I've myself only done it a few times, Jeff. 2
PeacemakerJack 10,739 #88 Posted January 27, 2018 This forum has some great guys regardless of what @cpete1 says! (i know that you're joking buddy!) If you have been following the thread, you know that there are several key parts that we need to continue on assembling JackRabbit. I received a PM from @19richie66 and he said he thought he might have some of the parts that we needed. I've had the opportunity to speak with him over the phone on several occasions and have enjoyed getting to know him. He looked through his stash and had several of the afforementioned parts. I asked him what he wanted for them as I was happy to purchase each item. He told me that he thought it was great that Caleb and I were working on this project together and that Caleb was learning some valuable life skills. Therefore, he said that he would send them to us for free! I asked him to let me at least take care of shipping but nothing doing! It was amazing to me that someone located over 1000 miles away, whom I'd never met in person, would do something like that for Caleb. I felt the best way to thank him publicly (after verifying it was ok) was to video Caleb opening the box and share it here! He included something special that Caleb was really excited about and wouldn't remove it until mom said, "Not at the supper table son!" Now it is time to get out into the shop today and work on JackRabbit! We have no excuses now that the parts have arrived!!!! 2

Sarge 3,463 #90 Posted January 27, 2018 Every new generation we can get involved helps us in the long run - that was a very good gesture on your part @19richie66 . I feel the same way - any sort of gesture to help keep new generations involved is a good thing - especially teaching them to fix things versus throwing it away and replacing, that whole idea is not sustainable nor smart - it uses far more resources than necessary, I hate how we've become a disposable society . It's not the way I was raised or taught - we were brought up to be self-sufficient and fix what we could instead of "wasting money" on something new, losing that has driven us in a bad direction. It's great to see a young man of his age group to get excited about some used parts - he will not forget that and it's a great lesson - he obviously has a great teacher as well, kudos to Dad and Mom ! Can't wait for more updates - I love this stuff.... Sarge 5
PeacemakerJack 10,739 #91 Posted January 27, 2018 Thanks Sarge! I agree with your above post and I desire my children to appreciate things and to take care of them (feels like a losing battle some days!) Got some more time with Caleb in the shop today. Since he is in basketball, they have a practice or a game nearly every night and that does limit our time together in the shop. I’ve promised him that I wouldn’t work on it without him. First up—try to remove the steering wheel so that we can replace the column... Gave Caleb a quick lesson on roll pins and spirol pins as well as punches. He was able to get the pin out but The steering wheel is stuck fast. I DON’T WANT TO DAMAGE THE WHEEL and so I’m looking for any input to crack it loose. In the process we noticed that the overall length of the one Richie sent was 6.5” and the one on the tractor was 4.5”. Did the C come with a shorter steering shaft and column than the other models? Here is JackRabbit. This is GhostRider (my 314-8). Richie’s column on top and JackRabbit’s on the bottom. I’m confused Then it was on to installing the fan. First up was teaching Caleb how to use a tap and die set to clean up the threads on the hydro... He used a little cutting oil and worked it like a natural. I can’t tell you how proud it makes me to see him not only doing this project but very much enjoying doing it! Even he was surprised at how much gunk was in the hole! Once it was clean, he dug out a new stainless bolt from my collection and installed the fan!!! Another project done, thanks to Richie!
WVHillbilly520H 10,374 #92 Posted January 28, 2018 (edited) Josh, if you notice the difference between the dish of the steering wheel spokes of the 418 and 314 there's your answer in column length, also hoped you reminded Caleb to use "anti-seize" on that stainless bolt before installing as it will become a true PITA when removing, as for the steering wheel to column (I believe I'll catch some crap here) try using WD40 SPECIALIST "RUST RELEASE PENATRANT" and/or RUSTOLEUM brand GEL Spray rust disolver (from Walmart or AutoZone I think I paid like $10) on my JD blade I converted over to the Kioti the main angle/hitch pin was rusted fast I couldn't budge it with an 8# hammer or even move the moldboard left/right, after soaking it myself with both above then having dad repeating this daily for a week the following weekend I hit it with a 16 oz ball peen and it "fell" out, BTW did the "JACK RABBIT" sketch show up yet? , Jeff. BTW did the "JACK RABBIT" sketch show up yet? , Jeff. The sketch showed up in the mail today and looks even better in person! You did a great job—thanks. Regarding the column length, the wheel rim depth may have something to do with it but if you look at the space between the rim of the wheel and the hood, you will see that it is at least an inch or two closer on the JackRabbit. I’ll measure it tomorrow. It isn’t a big deal, just curious if it is factory or P.O. modified. Thanks for your input on the removal of the wheel... We also cleaned up and painted the replacement Voltmeter from Richie... We are getting close to have the dash back together. Still have to sort out the wiring but we are getting closer piece by piece. Trying to to decide what to do with the fuel shut off. This tractor had water sitting in the tank for a period of time. You can see the rust residue visible around the plug and base of the screen. The shut off works fine but do you think that I’m ok to clean it up and install it? 3

PeacemakerJack 10,739 #95 Posted January 28, 2018 Thanks Eric. The rubber is still pliable and not cracked and seemed to hold the fuel well without leaking. The shut off does stop the fuel flow and then allow it again when opened. My main concern is the rust around the base of the screen. I suppose that I do have an in line filter and that should catch a stray particle or two of rust if some let loose over time. I’ll clean off what I can but I’m sure there is some that I won’t be able to get...
cpete1 332 #96 Posted January 28, 2018 (edited) Okay, Okay I'm late on the thread.... Just because maybe we have one situation where a member may have done something (send parts to a kid) that might be close to a "friendly act" still doesn't undue the general knowledge of how mean and nasty these people are on this site... I looked over the pictures of the kid working on this tractor... he doesn't want to be here, I can tell he doesn't like all the support these mean, nasty, irritable members are giving him by the noises he made when he opened the package. o-o-o-o-0, whoa-oa-oa, those are noises of pain, pure pain. And did I mention no talent! That sketch he got , back in the thread a ways, absolutely no talent. (looks professional...(I didn't say that)) That's another part of this forum. Mean, nasty, no help, no talent members ... all of them. And that hat the kid got... I got one too ( I bought it) when I became a supporter...(cause I couldn't believe how mean everybody was..) ,so when I tell my friends how mean everybody is here and how they don't help, I show em the hat and I say "see" .... I tell everybody how mean everybody here is....( wow, getting tired typing all this stuff...) Now I can show everybody the pictures of how unhappy the kid is working on the tractor...more proof. People don't believe me...(I wonder why?) Josh, this is absolutely excellent, The knowledge Caleb (alias "the kid") is getting from this is great. I would guess the support from this bunch of "miserable" people has got to be making a very good impression on him also. Not to mention the enjoyment he'll get when he gets the tractor in motion when the "clean-up" is done. With the talent that runs in your family, I can see a point down the road some where he might be helping you with a build some day in return... Not to mention those of us who are enjoying following this build. I'll be following along with all the other "nasty, Mean " members. Congratulations Caleb, you're doing an EXCELLENT job. Ed Kennell 38,719 #97 Posted January 28, 2018 I would definitely install a new grommet. You probably have installed these before, but here's my To get a proper seal, coat the barbed fitting and grommet with Vaseline and insert the barbed fitting into the grommet slightly to the first barb. Then insert the grommet all the way into the tank. Then push the barbed fitting completely into the grommet expanding the grommet. 3 1

That one I personally would replace, $10 part on eBay for piece of mind as the new fuel would start to dissolve that rust and send it forward either clogging the filter over time or getting in the carb, Good deal with the sketch, and the angle of the pic with the steering wheel might have gotten me, Jeff. 2
