T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #52 Posted January 25, 2008 Stephen, Just noticed your 1000th post. Congratulations, man. Joel, Are sure the rim is magnesium? Nice ride, Tim. And a nice shop. As for rich guys in home towns go, in our county, if you have a barn that doesn't have a zillion holes from rot and you have a double wide, then you're rich. :P
combatmp29r 27 #53 Posted January 25, 2008 No Terry I'm not sure. I guess I could take a knife and scrape a few shavings off. If the light and burn they're msg if not they are alum. Yes I carry a msgnesium fire starter in my combat load. Used it many times over the years. Stephen congrats on your 1000th post :D
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #54 Posted January 25, 2008 Joel, Sounds like a good test. As for welding magnesium or aluminum, it's all the same to me. I don't weld and so, which ever material it is, I would have to take it some place to have it welded. One of these days I'm going to get a welder and do some practice welding. Steel, of course, no need to practice on the exotic stuff yet. :D
combatmp29r 27 #55 Posted January 25, 2008 If its alum then I'll grind a grrove where the crack is, and change out th emig wire so I can weld it up. Its not all the way through, and doesn't leak any air. Just worried a good pot hole would finish it off!! :D
Rollerman 290 #56 Posted January 25, 2008 Joel if it was on a car I'd be more concerned? Maybe the pic doesn't do it justice & the crack is more extensive, but I'd think for a trailer rim if it can be repaired it be okay. Is it still straight with no wobbles? combatmp29r 27 #57 Posted January 25, 2008 No wobbles Nt sure it ever did not wobble No seriousely it doesn't shimmy or shake the trailer any the way it is, If it can be welded then I'm like you and it wil be fine. I'm just afraid that a good pot hole or uneven bridge (lord knows we have enough of those in OH) will finish the crack and pop a chunk out of the rim. Not what I want at 65 with tractors on it. combatmp29r 27 #58 Posted January 26, 2008 Good news the shavings do not burn!!! Aluminum it is Time to break down the tire grind the rim and weld it up.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #59 Posted January 26, 2008 Joel, That's great. It does pay too be sure and not just assumed something. I should know, I made enough wrong assumptions in my time. :D
combatmp29r 27 #60 Posted January 29, 2008 OK an update on the Lawn Ranger. This is about to become a pile of parts in the shed. The front end is shot. I know Mike said it was, but I thought it might be fixable. It has a box tube axle like a REO, all the holes for the spindles and steering pieces are wobbled out, the fan gear is cracked and broken, and the gear on the end of the steering shaft is worn way down. So I will tear it down, pack the good parts away in totes and shelves, and if I comwe across another good one for parts, I will build one up, if not then I will sell off some of it later on. nylyon-(Admin) 7,264 #61 Posted January 29, 2008 Can't save them all, some are just too worn out.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #62 Posted January 29, 2008 Joel, That's sad to hear. I know if it could have been saved, you would have done it. At least you tried. :D
combatmp29r 27 #63 Posted January 29, 2008 If it had been one of the older V7s or V8s i would have the parts here to do it. Even a newer B series. The only other pieces that match it that I have are on the REO. So it was a choice between the 2 and the REO wins hands down. So the LR will rest in pieces in the lean to
