combatmp29r 27 #26 Posted January 24, 2008 The faded fender is actually in awesome shape other than color. When I get some time, I'll see what aal the LR needs. May get parted out. With the hydraulics on the C160 I believe she will see use again. Probably wont get more than a partial tear down paint job, but still she'll be shiny and useful again. The lawn ranger wasn't so bad off when there was a fender there :D
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #27 Posted January 24, 2008 Great "score", Joel! That little fiberglass Lawn Ranger would make an excellent "speed buggy" too. There was a teenage boy at the WHCC show in '06 that was cruising the fairgrounds on one just like yours -- except his did about 25 mph! (his was shiny red though ) Anyone else on here remember seeing that one? (might even be someone on here's kid????? )
combatmp29r 27 #28 Posted January 24, 2008 I thought that too TT. I know where a 16 horse twin briggs sets that i could get for under $50. Now would it fit? I'll have to do some measuring when it warms up. It would look cool with a set of chrome stacks and rear slicks I originally thought about using it as a blower tractor. I just bought a blower that fits them off Jason. Now that I'm up close and personal with it I think I'll go back to my original plan of converting the blower to fit my bigger verts and do something cool with this one, or find some one who can use the good pieces off of it. TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #29 Posted January 24, 2008 The one neighbor kid had one of those about 6 or 8 years ago. He always talked about mounting the "body" on a go cart style frame with a 5hp horizontal engine mounted up front. (and lot of drive chain ) He had it in pieces and stored behind a friends garage when a flood came along and washed the 'glass parts away! They never did find the pieces! :D
combatmp29r 27 #30 Posted January 24, 2008 Yeah they don't weigh much. I made sure to bungee the hood before hauling :D
C-Series14 15 #31 Posted January 24, 2008 Why did you turn left out of the driveway? Did you go down to Inskeep Rd. and get on old 35????? See, that was bad karma!! lol! Glad all is OK in the end. Next time, have Thad come get stuff! :D
Buzz 502 #32 Posted January 24, 2008 Great "score", Joel! That little fiberglass Lawn Ranger would make an excellent "speed buggy" too. (his was shiny red though ) Anyone else on here remember seeing that one? (might even be someone on here's kid????? ) That was Alex, Don's son. Alex and his buddy bought it for $25.00 and got their money's worth. they tried to blow it up and couldn't. i think Don said he put a tach on it to check it out and they had over-ridden the governor and it was turning 6000 rpms LOOK OUT, GRENADE!!!! Rollerman 290 #33 Posted January 25, 2008 Buzz....6000RPM on a vertical? Joel is the rim that far gone that it can't be repaired?
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #34 Posted January 25, 2008 Buzz....6000RPM on a vertical? Hey Stephen..... The guy I bought the 702 & 704 from had a Kohler Magnum twin that turned 9500 RPM's.... His kid was pulling it when it "let go" at 46 feet on the track and it "COASTED" to 72 feet! He claimed wheel speed in excess of "200 mph"! I think he said it was on a JD with a WH 8 speed rear end. It was "pushing" a little over 100 horsepower too!
combatmp29r 27 #35 Posted January 25, 2008 Mike, yep sure did. Thats what I get for going out a different way than I came in. Mapquest claimed it was shorter that way so i thought I'd try it. If i had gone the otherway I wouldn't have met the semi that took out the tire. <_< I'll make sure to send Thad in the future Well if I can ever get ahold of him. Guess I'll have to drive across the field and find out how the new little one is
combatmp29r 27 #36 Posted January 25, 2008 Stephen, a vertical really isn't any different than its horizontal brothers in strength. The KV181 used in the commandos and chargers is a K181 turned sideways. They just added a partial pressurized oil system to get the oil from the sump to the slinger. Buzz, here are a couple picks of the cracked rim. If it was aluminum I'd say no big deal take it to a shop and have it welded and straightened. Its a mag rim though and from what I've been told over the years mag rims are magnesium. From what I learned in fire school years ago magnesium burns real well, so I don't think they can be welded. Rollerman 290 #37 Posted January 25, 2008 I've heard of some crazy RPMs from the puller crowd...but then there engines are "built" too....& you did say it was a Kohler too. Joel I don't know a bunch about the early vertical Kohlers...just been told they had oil issues. I'm still considering that Charger V8 & may go after it once it warms up. Still 6000 RPM sounds like a grenade comeing from a stock tucky or B&S throw away engine. :P
combatmp29r 27 #38 Posted January 25, 2008 Stephen, I was told the same thing by an old Wheel Horse dealer years ago, but Terry in Indy said he never had any issues, and I know I haven't had any issues with them. Maybe by the time its warm he will decide to come down alittle on the charger. I would worry about an aluminum engine with that kind of RPMs, but a cast engine not so much. Now that doesn't mean I'm gonna go out and do it either :D
Rollerman 290 #39 Posted January 25, 2008 Hey Joel... but I have had cases welded on some of my old dirt bikes & they were magnesium. Like you said...it does burn though.
combatmp29r 27 #40 Posted January 25, 2008 Hmmmm, ok I didn't know it could be done. Guess I'll call around and see how much it would cost, or if anyone is willing to look at it :D
catman81056 3 #41 Posted January 25, 2008 Joel it can be welded. My friend that I work part time for is as close to a master welder that I'll ever know. He'll be back this weekend and I'll ask him how. He had to do alittle welding on the original wheels on this car;
combatmp29r 27 #42 Posted January 25, 2008 OK thanks Tim. That car is beautiful. Worth a pretty penny too I'm sure.
catman81056 3 #43 Posted January 25, 2008 Thats the original Sunoco #6 driven by Mark Donohue in the late 60's-early 70's, owned by Roger Penske. You're looking at $ 1.5MIL sitting there. We've worked on some exotically "WICKED" cars It's owned by a very wealthy man in NY at this time. Now his stable does have a few horses, but their the prancing type. I'm not talking Ford either. combatmp29r 27 #44 Posted January 25, 2008 If any car fits the Wicked term that one is it. :D
catman81056 3 #45 Posted January 25, 2008 You should see his original GT40 Ford #4 9mil, P3-P4 Ferrari #32 priceless. He just had a 1 off Enzo made, 4 mil. The man has $$$$$.
combatmp29r 27 #46 Posted January 25, 2008 Roger Penske, yeah I imagine so. More money than I'll ever see. :D
Rollerman 290 #47 Posted January 25, 2008 Wow...I'm not into speed any more...but that car gives me some bad thoughts. I like the shop too. Nice pics Tal!!
catman81056 3 #48 Posted January 25, 2008 Penske doesn't own it now. A fella named Jim Glickenhaus does, real nice guy. You wouldn't know he was rich by looking at him. Plad shirt, blue jeans, and those red convers low tops. Thanks Stephen, shops located in Seymour Il, small but efficent. I didn't mean to hijack this thread sorry. combatmp29r 27 #49 Posted January 25, 2008 No harm in the Hijack. Very nice ride. I know a guy up by home that you would never guess wa sa multi millionair. Plain 2 story house. Blue jeans, 2 popper Jd tractor and implements. Now the lear jet in the hanger with the grass airstrip is alittle odd for my home town, but when the doors on the hanger are shut looks like any other farm airstrip. before you guys ask yes there are 9 or 10 such airstrips in the county I grew up in. Mostly crop dustin, or old biplanes, but still they are there. :D
Rollerman 290 #50 Posted January 25, 2008 I meet people like that doing the asphalt work.
