Ignition switches

Ok, so from what I've learned the 3-prong Hencol style key (3-prong type) are nearly impossible to find , especially good ones . Once corroded they just about can't be fixed since the case is crimped . Bad enough both 1277's use them , but also the 876 as well as the 854 !

At this point , I need at least 3 since only 1 out of the 4 tractors is correct/working. Spent most of the day doing research on the maker, Cole in Boston, MA . Turns out, they are the same Cole-Hersee Co. that makes a lot of automotive/industrial electrical parts . More research and turned up a distributor that may have some in stock - gonna call them tomorrow morning . Here's the specs-

Ratings at 12V DC: 25A Ignition,20A Start: 95610, 95612

25A Ignition, 70A Start: 95521-B.

Actuation/

Part No. 95521-B /Terminals 3 /Lock Seal o-ring/Case "G" / Bushing

95610 3 screw Lever S - F 5/8"-32

95612 3 screw Lever S O F 5/8"-32

95521-B 3 screw Hencol L O G 5/8"-32

Key is removable only in the Off position, spring return to IGN.

This particular part number (95521- uses the fatter Hencol style L key , 3-screw terminal .25A ignition circuit, 70A start circuit . It is intended for battery-type ignition (coil) and supplies + power to the coil in the "on" and "start" positions . Same exact dimensions as the oem unit , including the face nut .

Not sure, but if Wheel Horse used a Hencol keyed 3-prong switch for mag start engines it would probably be switch number 95520-B , same specs above except it uses the "off" position as mag ground, "on" is mag open and "start" is mag open/starter relay .

Here's a link to the pdf catalog from Cole-Hersee-

Cole-Hersee

The two switches mentioned above are on page 22 of the pdf catalog .

1234727837.jpg

They also make the starter-gen lamp , looks to be absolutely OEM down to the securing nut/internal lockwasher combo ...

Part #PL-20-RC red lense .

I'll post more tomorrow after a few phone calls .

You can't use a regular switch on a magnito tractor. Magnito style ignitions dont need voltage sent to them unlike automotive style coil tractors. If you use a reg switch on a mag tractor you'll smoke the coil and it wont start thats what happened to my 655

Tecumseh engines and Clinton engines use a magnito as well as some kohlers. If there isn't a coil on the outside of the engine you need a magnito switch.

The switch I want to replace is WH #4988 , for '64-68 battery-ignition Kohlers , Cole Hersee part #95521-B .

Cole Hersee also has part #95520-B for mag ignitions ....

The hard part was finding the L shaped Hencol style key switch, these are quite uncommon in other models of Wheel Horses . Seems I have no fewer than 4 tractors that used this switch !

Ok, got two gen lights and 5 ignition switches on the way . To my understanding, these are part of a warehouse buyout he's had for quite awhile . I'll post up pics of the new parts when I get them , then pass along the guy's info once they are verified to be correct/working .

I hate being the guinea pig....lol .

I'm so stoked-this last week has yielded so many parts that I've hunted for the last several years -including a correct 1277 7-slot hood , steering wheels(1277,876,854), and a lot of vinyl ...not to mention dragging home a 753 & 854 in the same day ! :horseplay:

Excellent !! I've bought a lot of hydraulic parts from them and some truly oddball stuff over the years , great place . That part number 95520-B according to the Cole-Hersee book shows it's a mag ignition switch, should work fine . Nice they included the leads on the one you ordered from SC ....great . All my stuff is older, battery/coil ignition systems.

The switches/lamps finally showed up today, I swear the mail system is getting slower ...

Anyway, they look great and are an exact match to the OEM switches/lamps.

1235406428.jpg

Just have to wait a bit for the weather to improve so I can start rewiring/installing these switches . Also, need to work on 2 more dash plates/decals for the "newer" 1277 and the 876. The 854 is going to need some welding work to repair the dash tower near the switch location, that will probably wait until summer.

Also, here's the link to the gentleman I got the switches from in Florida-

Vic's DC

Tel: (772)220-8952

Just follow the page links to the Cole-Hersee products , battery-ignition part number is 95221-B / mag ignition part number 95520-B for those that have newer engines in older tractors , verify your engine wiring first !

Hope this helps someone, I know it took a lot of time to track these down .

Not sure, according to the drawing I have for the Lausen engine the 654 uses the 4987 ignition switch while the 854,876 & 1277 I have uses the 4988 switch . You'll need to refer to your wiring diagram for that engine and determine if it's battery ignition or magneto . You may have to use the Hencol keyed #95520-B instead.

The switches look good, they are not bright new shiny, but more of an aged but very nice petina , should look great on a restoration .

Man, I apologize  , totally missed Kelly's post here...

On Vic's DC homepage you'll find a link to the table on listed ignition switches just below the Cole-Hersee section -

Switch page

The starter-gen lamps are not on his website, I had to ask him about them on the phone . Took a day for him to dig through the stock he has , most of it is not listed and he hasn't had time to inventory it all . Give him a call , nice guy and great to do business with - also very knowledgeable about starters, alts, generators , ect...

Hi All -

I need the Cole 95521-B for my 1045 and saw this thread -- man, I love the internet. I have a few things to add that might help the next poor sap like me who is digging for info...

In looking at the Cole Hersee website's catalog, I saw C-H makes an identical-guts switch that uses a chromed lever instead of a key. The lever one is part number 95521-01 (instead of -:notworthy:. For a few bucks more, I might do that.

Another supplier that has these (I haven't price shopped yet as I am waiting for a reply from Sarge's supplier above) is Electric Direct, linked below. As of today, the price is $32 for the keyed version and $36 for the lever version. The PL-20-RC (gen warn light) is also on elec direct for $9. Interestingly, I saw C-H makes the gen warn light is green and blue lenses, but haven't seen those for sale anywhere yet.

elecdirect.com (just put in the cole hersee p/n)

Good luck to all.

Matt, in Pittsburgh

I know the last time we spoke Vic had mentioned he had various different lense colors for those gen lamps in stock . He still has a very large inventory of parts that haven't been catalogged yet too.

I also saw that lever type switch, wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in them. Be aware that there are two different part numbers, one for battery ignition and another for mag ignition.

stone henge:

Sarge wrote earlier in the thread which is, I * think *, the relevant p/n for a 655 with the 6hp lauson/tecumseh engine (featuring magneto ignition): 95520-B.

Anyone confirm my understanding?

bests,

Matt

Gentlemen,

Surplus Center does not have any three prong, three position magnito ignition switches in stock for my Tecumseh H60 in my 551 Suburban.

As mentioned earlier Cole-Hersee has them, but with shipping, they are almost $50.00.

Per my phone conversation today, they can be purchased from Daves Tractor World 1-717-486-6703 for $25.00 including shipping.

I also called Cheap Mower Parts 1-800-438-0668 and spoke with Jeff at extension 224. He told me that the switch for a Snapper rear engine part number 7179 will work. He even double checked with his supplier to make sure it is a "Magneto" ignition switch. Total cost including shipping is $21.90. Also, if it doesn't fit my application, I can return it for a refund.

Jeff is putting one in the mail to me today. As soon as I get it I will try it out and post a picture of it along with the results.

Dave

The biggest thing to check on these switches is the D-hole size to match original and make sure if you have a mag ignition that the switch has one lug that is grounded to the switch body. Otherwise, there are plenty out there that will work.

Thanks for the heads up Sarge. I got the switch today and as far as I can tell, not one of the posts are grounded to it. I'll send it back in the morning. :notworthy:

An ohmmeter will tell for sure whether it's grounded to the switch body.

Here's a pictue of my old switch that clearly shows one post grounded to the switch body. I thought the new switch should be grounded like this one. :notworthy:
