dells68 7,498 #1 Posted October 15, 2017 Well, I've been so excited about this project that I need to share it. Can't tell my son though-this is going to be his Christmas present this year. He absolutely loves driving the C125 that I got from @oldredrider. I picked this ugly beast up for $50 at the auction in Charlottesville. I only wanted the deck from it. Got the idea to fix it up for Emory for Christmas. Best part is he thinks I'm doing it for me. Can't wait till Christmas morning for him to find out it's his. This is going to get the Vanguard I picked up last week. Got several ideas to make it just his. I'll share more later as I go. I do need to get in touch with @Vinylguy to get him to do a set of his custom decals for it. I'm going to need a little help hooking up the Vanguard. It's got one wire coming from under the tinwork and I'm not sure what I'll need. I'm thinking it will need a regulator, solenoid, and switch, but which do I use? Look at him in the last picture-no idea it is his! Oh well, that's enough for now! 20

dells68 7,498 #3 Posted October 15, 2017 Yup, Coyote and now Road Runner. Maybe that Briggs will let it live up to its name. No idea what model this is. The serial number is rubbed off the plate, decals telling are missing, and the 10hp Kohler seems to be a replacement. Think I'll just label it a C165 since it will be running the 16hp vanguard. Went down and tore off the tin work and engine. Kind of naked now. Emory is pooped! Look at that left spindle - bet someone took a mighty rough ride to do that!
SylvanLakeWH 25,472 #4 Posted October 15, 2017 Very Cool! Love the Black Hoods! If the 10 HP is original then it's a C-105 just like mine! Great machines! Enjoy the build and keep us hooked with lots of pics as you go! Lucky Boy...Lucky Dad!

Not so sure it's original - seems to show signs of being on another machine. Seems ok, has compression and is free. Haven't tried to start it, will probably save it for another project. 55 minutes ago, JC 1965 said: That's a Christmas gift he will never forget. I hope so. Just hope he doesn't catch on. Gonna get a set of carbon fiber decals from Terry and have him put Emory on the seat pan decal instead of Wheel Horse. Gonna wait till after Emory goes to sleep Christmas Eve to put that on. 7
dells68 7,498 #9 Posted October 24, 2017 Well, Road Runner has been at the spa for the last two days. I pressure washed his frame, stripped and etch primed the seat pan and hood, removed the brake drum and drive pulley, replaced the bent spindle, and did a few other things. I plan on welding up the broken seat mount holes (pretty common failure I think) and a few rust holes in the tower tomorrow. I removed the brake pedal and plan on making the clutch pedal operate the clutch and brake to make it easier for Emory to operate. Well, worn out, time for bed!
AMC RULES 37,125 #10 Posted October 24, 2017 That Road Runner keeps moving right along.
dells68 7,498 #11 Posted October 25, 2017 Worked a little while tonight. I welded up both seat pan mount ears and the holes in the steering tower. Please ignore my bird turd welds! I also rigged up my preliminary idea for getting the brake and clutch on one pedal. I also tried to keep the park brake by putting nuts on both sides of that rod on the brake band. It seems that I'll have to leave the spring off of the parking brake pawl for it to move freely. At least it seems to work. Guess I'll know more when I hook up the Briggs!

19richie66 17,497 #13 Posted October 25, 2017 Is that even the same hood? If so it looks way better than it did. This is going to be one heck of a Christmas present!

Yup, same hood - just without the rust and peeling paint. It's got a few dents I'll need to work out, but overall pretty nice. I hope it's as good of a present as I hope. Emory has been begging for a "big" tractor and now has decided he wants me to fix up an old CG8 so he can have one that looks like a big tractor. I think he'll be happy when he finds out "my" tractor is really his! 4

dells68 7,498 #16 Posted October 29, 2017 I Well, after sleeping for 3 hours after getting back from an overnight camp out with a couple of other dads and their son, I finally got a little more done on Emory's tractor. I managed to clean the dash tower and frame rails, knock a few dents out of the hood to mount and adjust it, and reassemble the sheet metal for a dry fit. I also cleaned the engine a little and ordered a set of custom decals from @Vinylguy. Emory asked if he could sand "my" tierods and of course I said yes!
dells68 7,498 #17 Posted November 5, 2017 (edited) I finally had a chance to work on Road Runner again. I got the engine mounted. I had to make 1" spacers to get the pulley heigth correct. I then found a couple of weld on grab bars for a roll cage that I had lying around and used them to make a header for the Briggs. They were the exact same diameter as the exhaust pipes already on it. I cut the pipes about 3/4" from the flanges and welded up the header. I've got a piece of 2 1/2" stainless exhaust pipe that I'm going to make a straight pipe for it. I had wanted to make a muffler like a 520 has on it without much baffling, but Emory came down and said he thought my tractor would look better with a stack on it, but he said I had to do what I wanted since it is my tractor. I also got the decals from Terry and they are awesome! I showed Emory all of them except the seat pan decal with his name. I might just pop before Christmas gets here! Funny thing is that I'm working harder on his tractor than I ever have on one of mine. It's just more fun! Edited November 5, 2017 by dells68 14
ClassicTractorProfessor 5,314 #18 Posted November 6, 2017 Looking great...and I can't think of a better Christmas present. Emory is going to be so excited Christmas morning when he finds out this is actually his tractor
dells68 7,498 #19 Posted November 7, 2017 Got a little more done tonight. I made the polished straight pipe out of a piece of 2 1/2" stainless exhaust pipe I got off of eBay for $35 (had to polish it after I welded it up - sure beats $125 for a polished one for a farmall cub). I also put a brace on the header to the engine block to hopefully prevent it from putting too much stress on the heads. I'm off tomorrow, so I hope to put in the better part of a day. 10

Yeah, I don't know Richard. I'd thought of that too. Right now, I'm just hoping to pull off a good surprise. His front tires came today. I told him if I didn't like them on "my" tractor, that I'd give them to him for his tractor. He has looked and looked at them, even smelling the new rubber smell! No time to work, but I put them by the tractor to get an idea of how they'll look. I also received my starter solenoid. Switch and harness, and front tubes. Emory asked if he could be in the picture and asked if I would buy him some tires like mine. I don't think he has a clue! 7
