1968 "500 Special"

I was just sitting here wondering if you would know where I can get the berrings, I guess you would call them, for the front wheels?

Partstree still lists them, so you can probably get them from your local dealer.

P/n 4999 superceeded to 110513 $10.87 each.

or an ebay search:

Mike I just tore my front end apart this afternoon on my 701 Im so %#$&Y* mad I could chit a monkey! My front end is as loose as a goose! Deiffinatley will need the KIWI job and more! Wouldn't happen to have a couple extra of those bushings would ya  Just kiddin...... Well I'm not but Its not like ya make extries.. Its amazing how an 1/8" play at that pivot point causes about 2" of play in the wheels. I can appreciate now after reading yer thread from my last post just what ya went through! :omg:

For front wheel bearings, most hardware stores like ACE or True Value should have them for around $4-6 each. They're pretty common. I picked up a couple here at my local Hardware Hank. Granted... they're probably not going to be the quality you'd get from the Toro ones... but what do you expect from the hardware store?

I bought eight on ebay a couple days ago for $1.88 each. I'd do a link but somebody cleaned out the seller's supply. :omg:

You can get the original heim bearings from your local bearing distributer for around $6. They are really nice.

I've had a busy couple of months, moving to Ohio, starting a new job, trying to get a 170 year old farmhouse back into commision, and get the garage in the new place operational. So I havent had a lot of time for the 500 Special.

However, here is the proof that things are starting to get done again:

I made a new pivot pin for the front axle, found some better spindles, fitted a spherical bearing to the front of the steering shaft. As soon as I get the mill trammed up, I'll be boring out the hole in the rear steering shaft support to take a bronze bush.

I'm really happy with the way the front axle mounted up in the frame. Its free to pivot nicely, but all the forward/backwards play has gone, and the repair is invisible.

The wheels are going one by one through the electrolysis tank right now and are coming up pretty nice. Its taking a couple of days continuously on each one.

Hopefully I'll have a bit more time in the next few weeks to show some more progress!

It's finally a roller! Still a lot to do, but it always feels good to get them to this stage!
