Ignition problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 1996 Wheel Horse 314-8 that has a Kohler motor on it. My issue is starting it. It does nothing for several tries at turning the key but finally starts. Seems to be getting worse. Makes no noise during tries to start; nothing till it finally kicks over. I've looked all over this thing to see if it is brake/safety switch related but find nothing. Help?

Here are some good wiring diagrams. Each circuit has it's own diagram making it easier to follow.

With any electrical problem the first step in curing it is to clean and tighten ALL electrical connections including grounds, this will clear up about ninety percent of them.

Thanks again to this forum. I will follow the diagram and chase these down and clean them as a start.

Another question; is the ignition somehow connected to the brake or clutch on this tractor that won't allow it to start unless brake or clutch is depressed?

There is a clutch interlock switch that requires you to push down on the clutch peddle to crank it over.

They went safety first on the newer tractors. My 2000 314-8 has a seat, clutch pto,and shift safety switch.

If any one of the safety switchs are not made it will not start. You can bypass the safety switchs one at a time to see if one is bad.

Possible problems  key switch ,pto switch,or starter.  I don't know if the 96 has a seat switch but there known to cause problems.

I would also check all wire connections

I purchased my 314-8 new in February of 1996.  It's been a great tractor.  But a few years ago I had landscaping done and contracted for lawn service.  So the tractor has been sitting in the garage for a few years.  Bought a new battery.  It cranks hard, but won't fire.  Probably needs the fuel lines or carburetor cleaned.  It also needs the clutch shock replaced.  I have the new shock and belt.  Just haven't gotten around to replacing them.  Deck is in excellent shape with new spindles before I parked it.  Comes with the nice pull behind spreader that has only been used twice.

      Thanks for you consideration.

Hi! The shafts of my fathers old 314-8, deck number 73449 have worn to the point the blades don’t stay secured. I’ve struck out tonight trying to find a part number. If anyone can assist, I would greatly appreciate it.

      thank you,

The belt on my Wheel Horse 314-8 mower deck (05-37SC01) appears to be contacting the deck bracket between the spindle pulleys. I am a novice when it comes to Wheel Horse maintenance (at best), but this does not seem correct.

I recently inherited this Wheel Horse, so I do not know the maintenance history. Unfortunately, the mechanic who previously worked on it was a no-show for a scheduled maintenance visit.

Any advice on how to address this? Thanks in advance... this seems like a great forum and I'm looking forward to spending time here!

I just got a 1993 toro wheel horse 314-8 today for free. It seems to be in good working order hasn't ran since last summer. Came with a mower deck, rear wheel weights, and a snow plow. My plan is to take the transaxle out if i don't like the motor and put the trans in my 520-h hopefully it works. Is there any pointers you guys could give me i would really appreciate it... thanks.
