Onan P-Series Ignition Module Replacement [Photos]

I am tackling this same issue next month with my 1992 416-8 Wheel Horse. I found this part on Jack's Small Engines:

https://www.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-parts-lookup/part/onan/1660821?gclid=eaiaiqobchmi4qhctmbc6aivewkgch2nfgeyeaqyasabegkyfpd_bwe

I am personally not thrilled with Jack's small engines. I ordered a hydrostatic transmission from them for my 54" Cub Cadet and it barely lasted a year and 30 hours. They would not make it up so I have a 2009 Cub Cadet with a great Kohler engine but a shot hydrogear drive that I paid $579 for.

I bought a new module because after installing a new coil that I knew was bad my 1988 518H still had no spark. It now looks to me like the module in my tractor is upside down, how can that be? Looking at the pictures here mine is definitely facing "down" . How did it run in the first place like that? I will turn the module over in the morning and hope to get spark. Frustrating several months, replaced coil and module and still no spark, perhaps it will start. Also took a picture of my old coil wiring before I took it off and that is different then what I see here, again, how did it run previously like that? A mystery for sure.

I would like a photo of that before you change it. :confusion-confused:

After turning ignition module 180* I am happy to report I have spark. It seems the timing may be off a little because it still not starting, fuel is there and it backfired a couple times plus it pushes out the carb also. The more serious issue is the new coil seems to get hot which is a big deal because that was ( I thought ) my original problem, the old coil was partially deformed from excessive heat and it was the first thing I replaced. Could the voltage regulator be a problem causing this? Down the rabbit hole I go... glad that some of you will follow me, thanks.

Here is a brief description, come back and ask questions as needed.

Remove the blower housing, then the flywheel.  The flywheel can be difficult without the proper puller, one can be made from a piece of steel with 4 holes to match the holes in the flywheel, and then add a hole in the center with 1/2" threads.  Loosen the center flywheel bolt two turns and then apply the puller.

I have mine installed on the Onan 24HP. It  came with Points. So I had to change to timing cover to mount the module. Where does the white wire from the points go?? I see the black wire from the condenser goes on the positive of the coil!!

Thanks RW

Since you eliminated the points the wire can also be eliminated.  With the conversion to electronic ignition, the condenser and the coil may be of the wrong values and not work correctly or fail early.

This is the kit I have for the conversion, you said I should eliminate the white wire for the point so where  does the new condenser connect to the positive side of the coil??

Thanks RW410836320_Onanconversion.jpg.c3e8a86617808c9241af04e2e95a04a5.jpg

I have a 1996 520H Wheel Horse for sale.  The tractor has just over 800 hours on it.  It comes with a 48 inch deck.  The deck is a 1995 and has over 1,500 hours on it, as it came brand new with my 312-8 that I sold several years ago.  This 520-H has the swept front axle so it can handle a 60 inch deck.  I just replaced the battery and the deck belt this summer.  The engine is a 20HP Onan and it starts right up but requires the full choke.  The transmission is an Eaton 1100-062, hydrostatic.  The deck is in rough shape but the spindles appear to be in good working order.  The right rear tire has some cracking.  The original operator's manual for the 520H is included, as is the original operating and maintenance instructions for the deck, plus the installation instructions for the deck.  Also included is a new PTO belt and several miscellaneous deck wheels and rollers.  Additional pictures available upon request.  Asking $500.

Experts - help please. I’m new to Wheel Horse Tractor life!

So - I’ve pulled out an inherited tractor and have decided to resurrect her. Unfortunately, no spark :/

I’m looking for help on diagnosing no spark.

      model - 417-8
      engine - Kohler KT17

Done thus far:  (aware that some have no implication on spark.)

      - new ignition switch
      - new battery
      - new starter
      - new ignition coil and wires w/ plugs
      - new condenser
      - new points
      - new starter solenoid
      - bypassed all switches except oil and seat.

      notes:

      idiot lights removed.

All fuses tested with Ohms as well as visual inspection  ..

coil tested w/ ohms as well

      all switches bypassed except:
-oil switch  ( don’t think it has any implications other than a visual indication for idiot lights. )
      -seat switch

ran a pos from batt direct to pos of coil - nothing; no spark.

      Electric is as follows:

      - Starter switch wired to solenoid
      - - solenoid to starter
      - - solenoid to batt

      - one wire from starter switch goes to engine ( I think this is for batt charge / flywheel)

      - I have two yellow wires, which are married up, that go to engine which have constant power; They power coil.  Comes from switch and seat.

Help - what the heck am I missing ?

I'm new here, but I have years and miles of dealing with electrical issues with my 1997 416H, engine Onan P216G (I am the only owner) . Problem description: the start circuit turns the starter over fine, but no spark at the plugs or the coil sockets by spark tester.  The ignition trigger tests good by connecting a test light to the coil positive and and the ignition trigger negative lead, plenty of light flash from the test light in unison with the engine turning over. So, I conclude the ignition trigger, replaced 3/18/2021 along with the coil is good.  I have followed the "Demystification" wiring diagram in detail and there is 12V at the coil positive terminal, wiriing is solid (for now), all those damn safety switches, key switch,  and relays work too. I conclude that the coil is bad since the primary side tests 3.1 OHM and the secondary tests infinite OHMS (1. displayed on multimeter).  Two coils (Onan part# 166-0820) have NEW dates of 3/2021 and 8/2021, and yes both have the same test results mentioned. Infinite OHMs to me means the coil windings are broken. The most recent coil came from Onanparts.com and tested as mentioned above when it arrived.  Onanparts won't take anything back!  There are a lot of coils on ebay and various suppliers from China.  Maybe good, maybe bad, who can tell? And most suppliers won't accept returned electrical parts. Please help: What are good test readings for a GOOD coil (primary and secondary). Who do you recommend as a reliable supplier for a new coil?
      Thanks for any help!

1992, Wheel Horse 520-H.   Onan overhauled: New rings, cylinders honed, valves lapped, new carb., new seals and filters, new fuel lines and primer bulb for easy starts.  Seat is like new.  Front tires are new.  All tires hold air.  Some repainting, but didn't need much; was stored indoors.  New decals.  Other new parts.
Has swept front axle and Variable Ratio Steering.  Belt cover ventilated to cool back cylinder.  Rear wheel weights are 55 lbs. each.
