953 transmission HELP

Recommended Posts

Vernon

Hello I'm new here and need help. A friend brought me a 953 that he picked up to fix up for him and I got it running great, Even painted it for him. It has a cycle mower on it. Did a bunch of work on it . I was trying it out and it got stuck in gear and wouldn't come out so pull transmission out and pulled gear stick out and took a screw driver and got it out of gear. thought everything was ok until my wife says is this a crack in the rear of the rear end and sure enough it was. After all this work. Is there anything I can replace this transmission with ?    I think this transmission is a 5047. Any help would be appreciated.

:WRS: Vernon, you have come to the right place for info on that transmission and rest assured  others more knowledgeable, @953 nut, and @stevasaurus come to mind,  than me on the intricacies of a 953 will be along. :)

We might want to see pictures of that crack, it's possible it can be repaired.

Vernon, welcome to Red Square.  :text-welcomeconfetti:

Actually, the transmission (if original) would be a #5045.  The #5047 would be the transmission that was used in it's place the next year.  I am not sure what the difference would be between the 2 transmissions...it may be negledgeable (sp) and not even note worthy.  Those transmissions are considered heavy duty and both have the bevel gear differential.  Like Jim said...let us see some pictures of the crack...depending on how bad and where it is, it may be braised or welded.  Transmissions that would bolt right in to replace what you have would be the #5045, #5047, #5051, #5058 and #5059.  You could also find someone with a spare case or half of one.  There is a reason it cracked...need to check all the pieces and see if anything stands out.  Here is the manual for your transmission...you want to look at Section II.  Let us know.  :)  Just click on the link below.

Thanks for the quick comeback. I will take a pic. And tear it apart. I have a welding and machine shop so I'm not worried  about welding welding the case. I'll take a pic when its apart. B a day before I can get it done.   Thanks          this is Neat forum

Thank you Vern, This is the best place for anything :wh: related.

These are really easy units to work on and other members here have parts & knowledge so no worry there. We like to think these transmissions are saveable. Yes let us know if you need a hand.

Here is a good thread with videos about putting together a transmission that is kind of like yours.  This one has the regular differential with spider gears, but the rest is just like yours.  It may help you figure out why the crack.  :)  Make sure you have the shallow side down when you open it up...also pull out the shifter.

:WRS:      With a little ingenuity you could transplant any :wh: Transaxle with 1 1/8" axles to a 953. One of mine has an eight speed from a 1967 model 1267 and all that was required was a couple of new holes in the frame mounting plate and swapping the axles to it (they are a bit longer. If the transmission if functioning properly you can probably save the one you have by welding it.

Anxiously awaiting pictures!    :techie-hourglass:

oh man that's a bummer but I thought i'd ask you seem like the expert on these models but I guess how hard was it to modify the new holes? to mate with the but  plate of the frame?

Just a bit of shade tree technology. Took a piece of file folder paper and taped it to the transaxle mounting plate on the frame and used a ball peen hammer to make holes where the bolt holes were (just like making a gasket). Next I lined up the holes on the transmission and bolted it in place with the two that lined up. Used the ball peen to make new holes in the paper and returned it to the mount. If memory serves me right I drilled one new hole and used a die grinder to elongate another.

Put a want ad in the Classified Section on the main page.  Check our vendors list...maybe @A-Z Tractor has the parts...send him a PM (personal message).  @racinfool40 (Mike) may also have what you need...find him either here or Facebook at Wheel Horse Junkies.  :)

:text-imsorry:        looks like we know what caused the crack in the case. Steve listed a lot of potential donors for a transaxle in post #3. As said before, you will need to use your axles and probably the shift lever too. At first I had hoped a little JB Weld on the crack would do the trick, but this is a bit beyond that. Hang on to the good parts, they may be able to save another horse down the line.

Thanks for all your help. I'm new to these wheelhorses. What model of tractors used transmissions that would work in this 953. I'm kinda lost when it comes to that.

In that PDF in post #3 that I put in there...on page 4 is a transmission usage chart...I also listed the transmissions that should bolt right in in that post.  You just need to open that up and take a look to get your answer.  :)
