Raider 12 overheating

Recommended Posts

Kyle Rogness

Hello Wheel Horse people, I have a raidar 10 with a 12 horsepower Kohler engine in it and it will run fine for 10-15 minutes then we'll overheat and drives sluggish with not much power any ideas as to what I should look for or possible causes?

Thanks in advance

Have you checked the air filter? That would be the first thing i would check if you havent replaced it.

Make sure there no trash or dirt under tins. That will cause it to overheat.

First off :WRS: Kyle...always use another Wisconsinite here!

Clean & check the carb & clean, check & set the points if it's a earlier k series. Running too lean may cause it to overheat but unlikely... Jimbo4 :text-yeahthat: has got you covered on the fins. Sounds like you have a Raider 10 that has been given a enginectomy if you got a 12 hp in it.

:WRS:   The first thing you want to do is to be sure the cooling air flow is not being blocked, Pull the tins off and check for mouse/insect nests or built up grass/leaves that could obstruct air flow. Be sure all of the tins are in place too.

Thanks for the ideas! @WHX11  we are not too far apart I am just north of Poynette.  The mower is pretty clean (or good enough right now) filter is fine.  What should the points gap be set at and how much oil goes into these motors?  Yeah its a 10 and then the guy we got it from put a 12 in it.

Thanks!

Yes Poynette not too far at all. Might want to check out the tractor show in Portage ...always a good turnout for us horse heads.

Points gap is .020, and i believe oil is a quart and some change ...QT & 1/4 to 1/2. If you have the older threaded style dipstick do not thread in to check. Might want to download the Kohler service manuals available in files section as well as the manuals for the tractor if you don't already have them. . Lots of good pointers in them.

According to the Kohler manual your engine will need two Quarts of oil.

8Fellas thanks for the thoughts,  I changed the oil new battery, new inline fuel filter and ran it for a while and it did the same thing where it overheated, checked the plug and it was grey, so it must be lean...adjust the carb?

Don't forget that these Kohler engines need to be de-carboned every 500 hours. A piece of carbon can stay glowing red in the head and cause pre-ignition causing overheating. Not saying that is your case but is a possibility.

Like 953 nut said pull the tins and clean fins and any potential mouse nest. Blow the fins out with compressed air.

Additionally, your engine may be running to lean with the carburetor not adjusted properly or it's sucking in air some where other than the carburetor.

Check the gasket between the carburetor and the block, check that the bolts are tight and adjust the carburetor.

Easy first few steps to take.

It could have a valve sticking on it causing this issue as the engine gets to full operating temperature. I would run Marvel Mystery oil mixed in the gas and it should help with that.

Hello, I have a Wheel Horse 656 that I repowered with a 6-1/4hp Kohler K141T that was originally on a log splitter. I've been having an issue with it shutting down when it gets hot. It shuts completely off like the key was turned off, although this engine is a pull start. It will start back up and only run on low idle. It will start up and run normal when cooled down. I originally thought it was the ignition and replaced the coil and condenser with new OEM parts and it still does it. I don't believe it's the fuel either because it pumps fuel, has new fuel line, OEM filter and new shut off valve with the screen. I then took out the valves and cleaned them up and ran a 5/16" reamer down the valve guides thinking that the exhaust valve may be sticking when it gets hot. So far nothing I've tried has worked.

I'm curious if maybe I'm just working it too hard. The mower has a 35" cut and I mow a lot in top gear up inclines and it's been pretty hot out. The engine is within the wear limits internally, has plenty of power and doesn't smoke or knock. It's set to about 3,500rpm at full throttle with no load.

Any opinions or suggestions on what might be wrong or where to go from here?

      Thanks, Tim

I have a 522xi and noticed the muffler is glowing red as shown in this video? Should I be concerned and fix it to normal operating temps or is this expected?

      Thanks,

Trying to restore a 1971 Wheel horse Workhorse 800 model 0100, It has a tecumseh HH80-110112D.
I cannot find any parts at all for this one, I’ve checked everywhere I can think online. This is my first restore, looking for some help to find parts or what I can use (swap) to keep it close to original but also functional.

Also the fly wheel has two **** that stick up off it that the coil passes and one is broke off. Is that a problem, I’m a mechanic but this thing is old and with no info it’s a guessing game.

      Parts needed so far:
       right side running bored/footrest
      Left side engine cover
      right side pulley cover
      Ignition coil
      Main drive pulley bearings
Hitch pin (goes through trans case)

I need to buy tubes or new rear tires for my 1971 Workhorse 800.  It has the original 22.5x7.50-12 Wheelhorse branded tires but sidewalls are leaking and one no longer holds air for more that two days.  Searching websites brings up various sizes but not the original.  Would a 23x9.50-12 fit this tractor?  I have a 36" RD deck on it.  Any other sizes work on this rim and tractor?

      Thanks!
