hcminis 1,537 #1 Posted May 2, 2017 Picked up this little gem yesterday. Not sure what model the tractor is yet. Sickle measures 44"..... I'll look for maual today. So far it runs good and sickle is very nice. The drive belt on sickle keeps slipping off. Never been around one of these so not sure what the problem is yet

hcminis 1,537 #10 Posted May 3, 2017 Worked on the sickle for a while last night. The adjustment bolt is bent so will need to replace it. Did a search on the John Deere belt and it is a 60". Plus, not sure the bar is moving to allow belt to be tightened. So gonna take the sickle bar off and change belt and make sure everything is free and not seized up. Plus, motor started acting up like carburetor needed cleaned. Would run fine and then start to die....then would only run on full choke....then would only start for a few seconds then die. hcminis 1,537 #13 Posted May 10, 2017 Well, after working on it a little more, found out it is the early SMS-425. This was for the Round Hoods....so....may be trying to mount it on the 701. OH..... additionally, if anyone has pics of yhe engagement pedal setup I wpuld greatly appreciate it
Thegearhead0324 1,246 #14 Posted May 10, 2017 Here's a pic of mine... not sure if it's the same set up..

So the foot control on your setup is just a tensioner pulley and not serving as the PTO since you have to engage the PTO with a handle correct?
hcminis 1,537 #16 Posted May 11, 2017 This is hoe my drive set up was. I'm missing the foot control arm and pedal. Any help is greatly appreciated
WHX?? 48,020 #17 Posted May 11, 2017 I would think you don't even need the pedal since you are running right off the PTO? Not an expert by any stretch but the foot pedal was just for the round hoods? Nice patina BTW
Racinbob 10,856 #18 Posted May 11, 2017 Early square hoods still used the pedal like the round hoods. You're right about hcminis not needing it though since he can disengage the pto.

hcminis 1,537 #20 Posted May 12, 2017 I will be installing the sickle bar on my 701. So I need the pedal. Now the task of taking the hack drive pulley extension off. Found thr pedal and other arms needed.
Thegearhead0324 1,246 #21 Posted May 12, 2017 To answer your question about my pic, couple reasons I have the pedal with the pto. 1 cuz I wanted the tension on the belt and not try a bunch of belts. 2 it's nice for safety reasons. The pto and pedal have to be engaged. If you can find one it just slides on the shaft and hook a spring to the frame.
hcminis 1,537 #22 Posted May 12, 2017 Thank you and great idea. Worked on the front pto drive pulley last night and uncovered a mess. The extension that was added covered up a hacked up drive rod that the bearings and pulleys mount to. Now I have to get help taking that all a part as it is seized on and may nees pressed off. Hoping my brother can fix it for me.
