From what I could tell via the parts list, it looks like there is a belt drive under the engine to a jackshaft that goes up to the top of the front right in front of where the person sits. Then at the top of the front there is another belt drive that turns a shaft through the center of the chain driven steering mechanism. Then that shaft turns a gearbox which turns that chain drive for the wheel... At least I think that's how it works. Didn't look at it long enough to work out the variable speed part.
