C-121uk 183 #1 Posted April 10, 2017 A couple of days ago we started to strip down the transmission from my RJ, it looks like it has been sat full of water for many years but at some point all of the bearings have been replaced (although they have all seized) and the seals look new? There was a mixture of bolts including some British (BSW) bolts holding it together and there was a snapped brass bolt which I managed to remove easy enough. The shaft on the part below is a little worse for wear, does it look like it needs replacing? The axles are in a very poor state and they are clearly never going to seal so we did a little bit of engineering and turned them around. One of the axles was turned around no problem but the keyway on the one above was in a poor state so we milled a new one. The holes and the old keyway were welded and turned down to create a tight fit on the gear in the diff. Its not perfect but hopefully it will last for years to come. I'd like peoples opinions on which parts they think may need replacing and also what do people do about the brass? bushings as mine are worn. Also are parts few and far between in the US as they are non existent in the UK. Thanks in advance!
stevasaurus 22,881 #2 Posted April 11, 2017 @Jake Kuhn sells all of the bearings, bronze, seals and gaskets as a kit. He is in Michigan, and I am sure he would ship the whole kit over to you. It looks like most of your gears are OK. If anything, I would try to find a better input shaft gear and a different 1st/rev fork gear. The whole thing should clean up real good.

C-121uk 183 #4 Posted July 11, 2017 Over the past few months I have been working on the gearbox slowly but I am pleased to say that it is all back together now and working great. First job was to make new bushes for the axle. when I got the RJ there was a sprocket welded on the input shaft and it was a little mangled so we came up with a method to clamp the gear in the lathe and turned it down so we could use a taper lock pulley one size below what it was. All of the gears and the 3 pieces that make up the casing were cleaned up to make them free of rust, extra holes have also been welded up. New gaskets were made and then it was all assembled. 2

meadowfield 2,595 #7 Posted July 12, 2017 No mention of how hard it is to get all the gears into that case! Or how many times we had to take it apart because if felt too tight!!!

stevasaurus 22,881 #9 Posted July 12, 2017 Right Mark, a lot of stuff in one bucket with those transmissions. One little trick, just put in a couple of the bolts in the bottom plate...not tight...so you can move the casting a little bit. As far as taking it apart a few times, because it feels tight...that is just part of the game and has to be done. I got to where I could put one of those together in less then 5 minutes.

Luckily for us, it should never have to come apart again 11 hours ago, AMC RULES said: Very nicely done... can't wait to see your in action.
