D-200 Transmission Weak

So I get the tilt cylinders rebuilt and want to see what I can lift. So I get the D loaded to go to up to my land.

Got some sizable rocks moved.

I got this one moved and then put on the rear blade to get some ballast. I could use some more weight and I am looking for ways to do that.

After about 45 minutes, the transmission seemed to lose it's power.  Where it would spin the tires trying to dig under this first rock, it didn't afterwards.  Though not an emergency at this time, the lifting is the most important and it seemed to transport them fine.  My question is this. I have another transmission from a D-180 (although it may have the same issue, I don't know). Should I swap the trannys like I did the engines or rebuild the transmission that is on it?  Will rebuilding fix this issue?

I haven't looked to see how these are attached, but are they as straightforward as the C tractors transmissions?

I most likely won't attempt it anytime soon, just wanted to get the wisdom of the group.

Download the Sunstrand manual from here.  Look at trouble shooting, there is a chart on "Loses power when hot"

 

Usually it is a symptom of a hydro with problems.  Dirt metal chips what ever have damaged the valve plates and when it gets hot and the oil thins there is a lot of leak by hence less power.    D's are not easy to work n and it has a separated system...the pump up by the engine the motor on the side of the transaxle.  Since the dirt moved through both pump and motor you will have to repair both...just replacing the hydro motor (the easy part) will probably not solve your issue.  There are several threads here about overhauling the pump and motor after you get them off.

The symptoms you described...loss of power when warmed up...is typical of a worn out Sundstrand hyd power pump and / or motor.  Aside from possible linkage connections, the D-180 and D-200 Sundstrand units are the same.  The only cure for the power loss is to rebuild BOTH the hyd PUMP and the separate hyd MOTOR.  The engine drives the pump which, by a 4-line hyd line set, drives the hyd motor that is bolted to the gear box.  Thus the term 'separated' system. The internal brass parts (and others) get scored from contaminated fluid (oil  or ATF) and these score marks allow hot oil to bypass, thus losing hyd pressure, resulting in power loss.  Not an easy fix, by any means.  I have done several of these rebuilds and can provide guidance...to a degree...of 'how to'.  If you undertake this project, include new seals, o-rings, gaskets, etc in the process.  Here is an example of damaged internals that you will find....pump and motor.

Ya know when I went to change the tran oil right after I acquired the tractor and noticed a red wheel horse filter on it, I kinda figured it wasnt well-maintained.

Thanks guys. Sounds like a winter project once I get my new shop built.....

The Front End loader and its frame have to come off, if you have a rear PTO it has to come off.  I have often said when they built D series tractors a guy stood in a the room holding the hydro pump....they then built the tractor around it.  I would take apart the units on your parts tractor open them up and see what shape they are in.  Then if they are repairable go ahead and overhaul them.  Then put them on you FEL tractor..save its pump/motor for future overhaul.  No way go through the trouble and work swapping out units on your FEL tractor until you know the replacements are good.  I have bought more than one pump/motor all of which came from "Good working tractors"   all of them had issues some so bad they must have towed them to the salvage yard.

      My friction disc in gone on my clutch.  I saw the old post about making a new friction disc, so I'm not concerned about that.
      I managed to remove the front clutch plate and double v-belt pulley.  But I can't separate the two.  When I took the assembly off the spiraloc washer popped off on its own.  I HAVE READ THE MANUALS.
      So I should be able to just remove the pulley from the front clutch and continue with step 4.  The v-belt pulley is loose as all hell and flops around like a dead fish.  It seems to be hung up on a ring or bearing race.  
      So my thoughts are grab a BFH or sparky the blue tip wrench.
      Is there an unpublished step 3.5, or some trick?

      A long long time ago there was a thread here about which wheel horse would be on your "wanted hit list".
      One of them was a GT-14 which thanks to Neil, one came my way.. A great machine which has now moved to pastures new..
      The other I'm sure you can guess from the title was a D-200
       
      Nigel bought this machine from Harry with the thought of changing the engine (which had a knock according to the bloke Harry bought it from), to something a bit different..
      Then Nigel made the mistake of saying something along the lines of "I expect you will end up owning the D eventually".    Which got me thinking
       
      A bit of a play with the wiring  (The PTO switch had been badly by-passed) and the engine had a spark, and a temporary gravity fed fuel tank sorted out the fuel side of things..
      Much to Nigel and my surprise the engine fired right up and sounded good with sign of any knocking sounds!
      The trans is a bit noisy but that may sort it's self out with a bit of use as the Big D hadn't been used in a very long time..

      The D gets better each time she is driven. The engine always starts first time every time
      Speaking of the engine, a new vacum fuel pump was fitted so I could get rid of the "tank on a plank" that was clamped on the front and use the D's original tank..
      The engine was also missing a cover, so I quickly folded one up from a bit of sheet steel.. Not pretty but does the job.

      Im new to tractor restoration and my first restoration project i want to do is my Wheel Horse D-200. I have no clue where to start on the project and was wondering if any of you had any pointers for a beginner restorer.
       The picture is my D-200 as it sits now more or less.

      I have a 1978 D200 wheelhorse powered by a Kohler twin cylinder engine
      It is used for grass cutting and has a 48inch cutting deck
      The manual PTO clutch is shot and I would like to fit an electric one
      Any ideas where to source a suitable one?
