Recommended Posts

Scored a 606 for free. Got it going tonight and there is no 3rd gear. If you force it and let off the clutch it just grinds. Any suggestions??

:text-imsorry:            Presuming it is operating properly in other gears I'm afraid you will have to pull it apart.

Take a look at this;

Other gears are fine! How much damage will it cause if I just drive it with the other gears?

Sort of a crapshoot, there could be pieces of the damaged gear lurking in places that will damage other gears or bearings.

do you feel lucky?

Image result for crapshoot

Probably need one of these.

Yikes!!:o It's just an old rust bucket so I guess I'll drive her til she gets tired!

Seems a shame to "drive her til she gets tired" when replacing one gear is not difficult. Probably only needs the one gear, a new gasket,  some gear oil and no special tools.

I'm a rookie with transmissions, but just finished repairing a 5025.with the same problem and it was a piece of cake. Just sayin'...

I just saw the $85 price tag for the gear and the tractor Isn't worth spending that much on it. Where did you get your new gear?

What gear is that for $85.  Chances are, I ahve it layin' around in my shop.... lots of gears, but I have to know the part # and a pic of the broken gear(s) would help.

post pics here or to my email address, which is:

I am in the process of rebuilding my unidrive three speed transmission. If all you need is the gear, that would be cheap. I need to replace the roller bearings, second/high gear and the seals. It's not going to be cheap. But, in my opinion, it'll be worth it.

I have a feeling this one is in pretty bad shape internally. I will probably just run it til something else breaks and keep it for a parts tractor

Not sure how far you are from NW Ohio, but I have a 3-speed trans out of a 1968 WH Commando 8 if I remember right. I have no need of it. Id take 50.00 if youre interested.

I have a 418-c  worked great plowing over the winter.. but now is having no power pulling a load fwd.
replaced the fluid.. the old fluid didn't look bad. feels a littls better., but still significant loss of power and high pitched whine coming out of the hydro.  the lift works fine

is there a repair manual our there for the hydro?  Is there a way to reverse flush the system?   I hear sometimes the hoses crack internally and clog things up.

As if we don't live far enough out in the sticks already.

We're going to go a few hours North and hang around rough camping with the moose for a few days.

Can't even begin to tell you how much I'm looking forward to it!!

In the process of replacing the spindle bearings on my RM-367 mower deck, I got to thinking about the gears that drive 'em.  As you can see in the image, the teeth are well worn, but only where they mesh with the cross-shafts teeth.

I'm wondering if there's any point in turning the gears over to engage the un-worn teeth.  But the cross-shaft gears have also worn in similar to the teeth on the spindle gears.

I'd appreciate anyone's opinion on the advisability of turning the gears over.

I'm neither a collector nor a restorer, but am the original owner of my 1967 Model 857 tractor.  It just might be the best made piece of equipment that I've ever owned.  Solidly built.  The Kohler engine has been ultra-reliable.  I've never even had the head off it.  Points, plug, carb cleaned, air filter replacement - that's about all I've ever done, yet it starts at one turn of the ignition switch.

In addition to mowing, I've also got a snow blower and mid-mounted grader blade, and a home-made trailer hitch for dragging my wood splitter around.

      Thanks all.

(BTW it looks like Toro wants $116/each for these gears.  Not in my budget.)

I just purchased 312-8 .. I believe it's a 1987 as engine serial is 1987. Seat switch ....two of three seat switch wires were disconnected and warning light panel is out. Test switch activation shows no change when activated . I would like to reattach seat switch wires with the hope the dash test lights deactivate? I have an orange , black and light green but not sure which bayonettes on the switch to reattach them to. The black wire was attached to switch but may be on wrong batonette?
bayonettes on switch are labeled com, no and nc. The black wire was attached to "no " position  when I pulled out switch. I was wondering if anybody knew which color wires go on these designated positions on the switch? Thanks
