I picked up a Toro, Wheel Horse 522xi but it doesn't have a model or serial number ID tag on it anywhere?  Is there any feature or something to determine the year and other ID?  I have the engine data: Kohler mod CH22S, Spec 66545, disp 624, serial number 2813615731.  It has tilt steering, high/low hydrostatic drive and a 60" deck but the deck ID tag is missing the 2/3's of it that had it's model and serial number.  Pictures attached:

Welcome to the forum.

Kohler built the 2813615731 serial number in 1998

Toro used the 66545 spec number 1998-2001.

Could be a 1998 522xi model number 73560. Use 8912345 for a serial number.

Could be a 1999 522xi model number 73561. Use 9912345 for a serial number.

So between the seat mount and gas filler in the dip of the fender pan is normally where the model/serial tag is located, Jeff.

Thanks everyone.  Really appreciate the responses.  Looks like the engine is the best match up for a 98 or 99.  Just changed the hydro fluid and it looks like it's been a long time between changes.  The filter actually had some rust on it.  Runs and sounds fine except my 520H runs faster in forward so I might have to check out the speed controls.  The engine doesn't seem to run as high an RPM as the 520H but I'll just have to check everything out.

WVHillbilly520H: yeah, there isn't a sticker anywhere on it.

There is also an in line screen on the line that might be full of crud and I bet needs cleaning to. Mine was clogged pretty good. I hope you did the filter also. That deck is a bear. Good luck.

Sorry just trying to help out and yes all 3 of my 520Hs are faster than my 520xi that also ran an 60" deck since new 1020 hrs now, FYI go through and check the frame to transaxle mounting bolts as all mine were loose allowing it "rock" back and forth while switching between forward and reverse, and the motion control cam was out of neutral adjustment as well as the pedal linkage,  also check the mower mount linkage spring loaded "J" hooks for excess wear as well as the mid attach-a-matic, hope this helps out, Jeff.

Well, I finally cut some grass today before the rain comes and it looks like there's a steering issue.  I had a hard time keeping a straight line.  Was cutting my side yard of about and acre + on about a 20° slope and it wanted to wander all over.  had to constantly over steer to the right and a little to the left too but more to the right.  When I cut a about a 30° slope in the back yard I could rotate the steering wheel more than 360° to the right just to keep it in line!  Haven't dug into it yet but it seems it's a serious steering issue.  It cut well with plenty of power but I'd have a hard time cutting my hilly back hill of about 2 acres, that's for sure!

Both my "xi"s steering could use some attention so I'll be following along.

Check the bolts and bushings that hold the steering ram on. They are in the tunnel. Mine had one totally sheared off and just 1/2 of bolt was holding the ram on. The other was worn pretty bad.

Then check the steering linkages for excessive play, i have some needing replacing. Then go up to the spindles. The steering arm is bolted to a spline on the top and they will come loose and wobble. With all those added up my front tires would freely jump back and forth probably 10+ degrees. After fixing the rams bolts and tightening the spindle arm i am down to 1 or 2 degrees in just one of the wheels.

The speed issue could be the transmission bolts like Jeff mentioned, or the "smart turn" feature and all the pedal linkages need to be checked tightened or replaced. I abought the smart turn delete setup from toro so mine will turn without reducing speed.

Its nice to see someone else local. I saw that one on CL but never could go look at it.

Let me know if you need anything! Welcome to Redsquare!

bmsgaffer:  Thanks for the info.  I'm running new electric to my detached garage this weekend.  Had to dig a 100' trench and run conduit.  My old line was just buried in the ground and got tore out when I installed geothermal several years ago.  Now when I'm finished, I'll have all my lights and electric back so I can work on my tractors with some light!  What part of town are you in?  I'm out by the farm county in Colerain on Blue Rock about a half mile before the Great Miami river.

Thanks again,

Don

Hi Don!

I am not far from you, I am just off West Fork Rd in Green Township. Just a small half acre lot, but that doesnt stop me from buying and using these awesome tractors. You wont be able to stop with just one once you find all they can do!

I have a few running around. Just finished dropping a 25hp Kohler EFI engine into my 522xi, its a brute.

I hope the electric install went well, we might be getting some pretty good rain, tomorrow.

I know this is an old thread but i'm having the same problem as the OP.  My label is actually still on my 522xi but has been sun bleached.

Kohler engine

Spec # 76551

model # chs22s

serial # 3208105881

My ignition switch has gone out and the dealer cant order one with out a serial number for the tractor. Said there are to many variations within the 522xi.  Any help would be so appreciated.

thanks

Sorry I missed this.

Kohler made the engine in 2002 by the serial number.

Toro used the 76551 spec in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Safe to say your 522xi model 73561 is a 2003 model.

If you ever need a tractor serial number use 230123456.

The ignition switch is Toro part number 92-6785.

Thanks Garry. Where is the best place to order parts? Do we have a dealer on here that you recommend?

This site always seems to have good prices and understand they have a flat rate shipping policy. Good if you need other items.

Garry I'm concerned with the config of the 92-6785 switch. The configuration letters do not match mine. Could they have just changed the terminology when they replaced the 101917 switch.

Have seen notes where some switch terminals are not properly identified but not on the 92-6785 switch. In those cases the switch function was to be compared.

Added some color to the wiring so you can compare with what you have. The wiring I used is for the 2002-2003 522xi.

Have noticed the switch function tables from early to late do not match for the 92-6785. If you happen to discover which is correct would like to know.

The 101917 switch was used 1970-1974.

The 92-6785 switch shows up 1994 and later.

Trying to figure out exactly what I have a friend gave it to me said it was a 1963 8hp Kohler he's right on the engine but I think he is off on the year and I can't find a serial or model number on it I got intending to completely restore it but I really need to identify what I have I would really appreciate any help and advice

I purchased what I was told by the seller, to be a "partially restored" 1975 C Series. I have it now for 3 seasons & have concluded that this restoration consisted of replacing a few bolts and repainting it and replacing some of the decals. The seller told me he "screwed up" on the Model Decals when he ordered them, & put the wrong one on it (C120), but did not tell me the correct one that should be on it, and he gave me a 1975 C Series Owners Manual with it. I am wondering if the Model Numbers correlate to the horsepower of the engines. If that is the case, I must have a C100, because mine has the Kohler 10 HP engine, which is labeled as a K241S. It has an 8 Speed Manual Transmission.

After getting it home and using it, I put it in my shed & the next time I went to use it, I see the transmission/gearbox has leaked oil onto the shed floor, appears to be coming from the seam between the two halves of the rear-end. I also see a heavy black greasy film build up at both axle seals & also around the brake drum seal. I am now in doubt of the recommended oil for the rear end. Some of the online forums say that they had begun using transmission fluid as a replacement for older types of lubes, while others say 10-30 motor oil. I saw someplace which I can't seem to find again right now, that 85W-140 gear lube was what should be used. The oil level on the dipstick has not dropped to low levels, and appears to be motor oil, so after searching around and also checking the manual given to me with the tractor, I top off the level with 10W-30 as spec'd on page 5 of the manual(if this is indeed the right manual for my year and model).

My problem now, is that last season, it suddenly seemed to get a bit sluggish & slow down as it gets warmer during use. I believe my sluggishness problem might be due to the leak in the box seam and possibly also the type of fluid/lube in the case of the transmission/gearbox. I had already tweaked the carb as best I could, changed the fuel filter, replaced the spark plug due to a hard starting condition and rough running, & it seems to be running fine right now except for a backfire when shutting it down. I have purchased a replacement carb for it that I have to put on now, & I am pretty sure I need to locate & change the points as well.

Anyway I am hoping that someone can point me towards the right manuals, by placing all numbers I have been able to find on it here so I can hopefully find the right service/repair manuals (hopefully as free downloads someplace online) for the different systems.

Just scored what I believe to be a c120. But I'm not sure. It has the 3 speed unidrive, which I know is incorrect. Not sure if it's been swapped or if something else is out of place. It looks the serial number plate was stamped twice!?

I've been a member here less than three weeks, and every day, and every thread I've read and participated in has been a wonderful, informative experience and I've found RS to be an extremely friendly place to hang out.
I'd like to personally thank everyone who has read my threads and my commentary in other members threads. It's all been helpful beyond belief, and I've established some fantastic connections with other members concerning my area of WH interest.

I'm searching today for a PDF file link someone posted within the time I've been enrolled here which listed all model numbers, year of manufacture, tractor description, model name, transmission type, engine make, engine serial numbers, horsepower rating, transmission manufacturer, & transmission model number.

I've looked at the threads I've posted and looked at my "Followed Content" and I can find a thing.
I thought I had saved the link to file, but I can't find that in my Bookmarks either.
I can't seem to locate it if my life depended on it.
I'm pulling my hair out (which is decreasing daily naturally anyway) trying to find this PDF.

Can anyone rescue me from my dilemma and point me to the link for a Model & Year PDF file?

      Regards,
      Steve
