USHorse 41 #1 Posted March 12, 2017 Have a working Kohler with really high RPM when i push throttle cable wide open. About to adjust the Govenor assuming that is the fix. Should adjustment be done without throttle cable and spring attached? Manual does not mention this.
Shynon 7,474 #2 Posted March 12, 2017 Unhook the throttle cable
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,148 #3 Posted March 12, 2017 Adjusting the governor just syncs the governor to the carb throttle position. Top rpm is limited by the amount the throttle cable travels. This will be before the governor spring that is between the throttle cable and the governor arm. Garry
USHorse 41 #4 Posted March 12, 2017 All makes sense......Thank you both
cleat 6,778 #5 Posted March 13, 2017 Unless the governor is bad then it will to to instant full throttle. I had an old Kohler 341AQS that had a broken governor All it had was idle and full throttle. I mean absolute throttle plates wide open full throttle. I bought it that way. No idea how he even used it. Rebuilt the governor assembly (new gears etc) and machine ran good again. USHorse 41 #6 Posted April 1, 2017 Back again..now have time to tinker. Question regarding throttle cable and hook up. Something must be missing from this setup. Throttle cable directly connects to speed contol arm and one clamp fastens it to shroud. Should there be more hardware? PO has cobbled this tractor so up here and there so not sure what is right. Engine is k341 spec 71371 serial 14199379. Anyone have picture of proper set up? Sorry for no picture, problem loading.
stevasaurus 22,955 #7 Posted April 1, 2017 This is for an 8hp K181, but it should be about the same.
pfrederi 18,060 #8 Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) The big blocks used a different linkage than the 8hp There is a rock shaft on the air shroud, throttle cable goes on the bottom. Fixed link on the top goes to an arm mounted on the front of the block. There is a stop that limits the arms travel (high speed limit). The arm is connected to the governor arm by a spring then the governor arm to the carb by a fixed link Edited April 1, 2017 by pfrederi
Sarge 3,464 #9 Posted April 2, 2017 Exactly a good reason to own the Kohler single cylinder engine manual - there is a digital copy in the manuals section on this forum . The high speed limit tab is to the right of the bolt on the center arm in the picture that has the governor spring on one side and the solid link to the throttle wire arm on the other side - just above the fuel pump . On a 341 or any big block , setting that high rpm limit is very important unless you like seeing cast iron exploding , lol . Manual can be downloaded here - Sarge
