fretscha 0 #1 Posted January 20, 2009 Hello, i have found a mower deck in germany and now i asked me if it is a 42" or 48" model. Where i have to measure to find it out? regards Jens
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #2 Posted January 21, 2009 Mower deck size is determined by placing all blades at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel and measuring the distance between the two outermost blade ends. This is also known as "width of cut".
Teddy da Bear 11 #3 Posted January 21, 2009 I think most people measure across the greatest width of the deck shell. If you have the model number off the metal tag....you can go to the toro site and type it in. It will then tell you what you have. I, personally turn the deck upside down....and measure across the blade cutting width. Good to hear from you!
fretscha 0 #4 Posted January 21, 2009 Ok, then it is a 42" mower deck. But i am even so happy. Principal thing is that i have finally a deck for my 316-8. And a 42" dozer blade too. Is it possible to get Recycler kits in the USA?
Sparky-(Admin) 22,048 #5 Posted January 21, 2009 I dont know if the recycler kits are available anymore. I believe they only work on the rear discharge decks so if yours is a side discharge then it doesnt matter. Mike........
Duff 206 #6 Posted January 21, 2009 Hi, Jens, Something you might want to consider are "gator" mulching blades for your new deck. These chop up the grass clippings very fine and help them to decay more quickly to replenish the soil. I've found they also (usually) leave less "clumps" of clippings behind. I've enclosed a link to the supplier I use. You may have to take a few minutes to get used to navigating around their site, but the critical information you'll need is to measure the exact length of the blades and the size of the mounting hole in the blades on the deck you have to match them up properly. Good luck and congratulations on your new deck! Duff http://www.baileysonline.com/search.asp?SK...gator&catID=

TT is right, it's measured from the end of the outer blade tips.
Teddy da Bear 11 #8 Posted January 21, 2009 Terry.....that is what I said in the last part of my post. I cannot help that most people measure across the shell...
jerrell 1 #9 Posted January 21, 2009  " how to measure a deck?" i am very surprised that someone hasn't posted yet... "with a tape measure"" the blade tip to blade tip seems to be the cutting width, and the deck would have to be larger for the blades to spin, so you have deck width and cutting width sorry fretscha , just couldn't help myself..
illinilefttackle 399 #10 Posted January 22, 2009  Don't laugh guys-when I got my horse-told Tickster I had a 48 " deck-because I had measured across the deck shell-just seemed natural. But then I learned the error of my ways- I learned my error of my ways in choosing a wife too-but that's another story!-AL

Teddy da Bear 11 #12 Posted January 22, 2009 Jens, so glad you finally found what you were looking for. Guess there are more wheel horse parts than once thought in Deutchland! I learned my error of my ways in choosing a wife too-but that's another story!-AL whtractor/disgust[1].gifI had no idea about that Al.... I mean about how you measured a deck... I am truely sorry about the other choice too....
illinilefttackle 399 #13 Posted January 22, 2009 Teddy & Old Iron- In many ways life is but a series of "measurements". The accuracy (or inaccuracy) of your measurement can set you off in the wrong direction costing you years of your life- and in some cases burdening you with an "Albatross" around your neck. Hence the quote-"water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink". You can get very thirsty for the joys of life at times. But I am thankful for what I have, I've had my "15 minutes of fame" and thank God for each new day! AL
