eibbed 63 #1 Posted January 18, 2009 Gentlemen, Does the 4 HP Kohler use a pull rope to start or does it have a recoil? Also, does it have a shaft smaller than 1"diameter? I located two of them yesterday, pull rope start, painted red and I think 4 HP. Thought maybe they were used on earlier Wheelhorse models. What do you think? Thanks, Dave
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #2 Posted January 18, 2009 The K-90/K-91 Kohler engines could have retractable (recoil) start, rope start, or even electric start. (starter/generator) I have seen at least four types of recoil starters used on these, including Schnacke, Fairbanks - Morse, and two versions of Kohler's own stamped steel unit. Some were battery ignition, but most seemed to have magneto ignition. I believe the "standard" crankshaft diameter was 3/4". It's probably easier if you post pictures.
linen beige 14 #3 Posted January 18, 2009 I'll add that some even had 110 volt starter motors that plugged into the wall. Kinda useless if the engine died in the field! (I know they were meant for stationary apps.). Check the model number tag closely before you try one on a Wheel Horse. Some had gear reduction units. The cranks on these weren't long enough to mount drive pulleys to. The gear reduction models were K-91 RT, RS, etc. Like TT said, pics would help.
