Rustyred 63 #1 Posted February 6, 2017 In over hauling my 8 speed transmission I found the gear damage shown in pictures below. How much damage is too much damage? Do these gears need to be replaced or are they good enough. And the third picture looks to be unique. Thanks again guys for taking the time to reply.
W9JAB 156 #2 Posted February 6, 2017 Ouch! you got it down that far, it would be silly not to replace it.
stevasaurus 22,882 #3 Posted February 6, 2017 I think I would like to see some more pictures...from a little farther away before I could say how bad they really are. The camera will pick up details and make any gear look like it should be replaced.
Rustyred 63 #4 Posted February 10, 2017 Stevasaurus asked for a wider shot of the gear. Does this help with your assessment? The gear shown below has the most damage - I guess due to grinding? Replace or no? Many thanks.
stevasaurus 22,882 #5 Posted February 11, 2017 See, everything looks better from a distance. Seriously, I think you will be OK with what you have there. That spline shaft in the 3rd picture in your 1st post should be OK also. Make sure to come to a complete stop before shifting gears. Thanks for the picture.

Racinbob 11,241 #7 Posted February 12, 2017 I'm with Steve on things being OK. I would check the inner teeth of the 3523 3rd/2nd gear. They are really prone to damage from grinding the gears.
