GT22-8 Modifying GT14 to 8 speed and 22hp Predator

5.  All 8 pinion differentials have axles that are the same length...1 part number for both axles

6.  If a hydro has the 10 pinion differential or the 8 pinion differential...all of the above applies

7.  Only the #5060 10 pinion LS differential (1968) had aluminum end plates...1969 and up have steel end plates

8.  Service Bulletin #252 explains the conversion of limited slip differential to 8 pinion differential

9.  If you have 4 pinions, you have 1" axles

10. If you have 8 or 10 pinions, you have 1 1/8" axles

11.  All 1 1/8" axles from Wheel Horse transmissions "should" be able to interchange

 

OK...what does all this mean?  If Aldon has 2 axles the same length and they are the length he wants (so his tires fit), he will be putting them into an 8 pinion differential and he will not have limited slip.  If he wants to modify (cut one axle shorter then the other), so as to have the same distance sticking out past the frame, then he could use a 10 pinion LS differential.  Hope all that makes since.  :)

I saw a really nice tractor at the Big show with a paint job that costs as much as a few of my tractors combined. It had Nitrous. So it's in the back of my mind. Just not sure it would ROI.

So I am finally getting to the re-assembly portion. I have seated the bearings. I managed to damage the small input shaft seal so I'll see if I can pick one up at Napa in morning otherwise I'm down a week waiting for a spare seal. Then it's putting the puzzle back together.

It sure seems like I need another mortgage whenever I decide to build a custom project. But in this instance it's simply poor lighting. That's rust colored primer. I'm very likely going to use same color scheme I used on my GT16 restomod. Matching pair. Black frame and tranny.

Aldon, I love these projects! My 312-8 is fully assembled and operational. I belive I still have the engine mount plate for the m18/m20 if you or anyone on red square has the interest of using it. I am also very eager to start a 4x4 project as my first "custom" project as far as fabrication. however i am limited currently due to the access of a mill welder and lathe. Im interested to see how the 2 gt tractors match up next to one another.

So I have the widened 8 speed ready to bolt together and paint.

 

I was sure I had new bolts and nuts. Alas, I hate it when you get ready to close out a major project milestone and have to delay for something so insignificant. 

 

Regardless, I should have this sealed up and painted in next few days.

Thanks Aldon for the kind words.  :handgestures-thumbupright:  WOW!!! That looks like a tall drink or water coming out of that differential.  :handgestures-thumbupright:  I like what you did...you can see how the bull gear meets with the 11/44 toothed gear in your 8 pinion differential.  Well done my friend.  :)

Yes. I used the longer one. The 14 3/4" axle. The GT14 axles in hydro transaxle are two different lengths. So I used the longer of the pair I got from you along with the longer one I had on hand. The 8 speed uses axles of same length on each side. Viola!

The GT22-8 project I have in my head will look like the brother to my resto-mod GT16 "Elijah".

 

When dust settles these may be the only 2 GT14's in the herd. Going to spruce up the runt of the litter B100 for routine mowing duty.

 

Then I have my eye on Tackling a D250.

I guess you should consider calling the GT22-8 Samson considering the fact that it will be so strong.

I thought you just sold your D250, how many of them do you have?

Rich I have way too many and yet not nearly as many as a lot of you.

 

I started this journey with  C161 twin Briggs w/fiberglass good which I still have. 

 

In addition I now have 3 complete running GT14's 1 of which is dubbed "Lazarus".

 

I also have the GT14/2 or GT16 restomod dubbed "Elijah".

 

I picked up the B100 on a whim. I have grown fond of it. I think it will now around the wife's flowers and shrubs with less carnage which will mean more marital bliss.

 

 And by spring I will have the GT22-8 quite a ways through the build process. 

 

I like your your suggestion as to name. It is one of the top contenders.

 

I will also have to come up with a suitable name for the B100 as I'm think it's going to stick for a while.

 

I will likely be selling or trading at least 2 of the GT14's as I've decided I want to bring a D250 into the fold next.

Got a bit done on my project today while waiting out the Nor'easter.

 

Added a zerk fitting to the hitch and threaded the hi-lo ball bearing/spring access hole and installed a set screw.

 

 Tranny and accessories painted and are drying.

 

Got the frame prepped to start mocking the tractor up once the tranny paint has cured. 

 

And while it's not part of this build I got my B100 running good and new rear tread. Before picture is one with chains.

would that happen to be the d250 near whitehall  with the rototiller? Also you should get plenty of pictures with matching gt-14s in case one gets sold to make room...

Excuse my ignorance Aldon but is that a typo to mean zerk instead of zero? If so what is the thought behind the milled placement? Also what is the purpose of tapping the hi/lo spring / ball access.... I just siliconed mine shut since the ball spring is trapped in ther? 

BTW nice to see you are goin back in black :lol:

I milled it down so it allowed the zerk to tighten flush.

 

I like the set screw better than silicone but both work equally well. If I ever have to work on the hi-"lo again, I feel like the set screw will be easier to pull. Depends on how cleanly the silicone plug comes out. Whatever was in their when I tore it down did not clean out all that easy.

      I have a question about the 69’ model. I took my tank out to work on carb easier. A couple weeks later as I put it back together & after cleaning everything; I replaced the white weatherstripping that was at bottom of tank and on the corners of the strap. Seems to be all that holds it in place. Because the strap around the tank will not go around the metal bracket on bottom and fit the tank. And even if it did the strap would only line up with the bracket mounting bolts which would be in the way. What did I miss? Didn’t pay close enough attention when I took it apart and can’t see in the parts diagram where the strap does go around the bracket. The weather stripping is tacky enough that the tank stays in place and it is a made to fit perfectly in position. Just seems that the metal strap is pointless.

      I have a old gt14 and the plastic plates or control panels are way past their prime, and I saw someone was remarking them with a 3d printer a little while back and I was looking to se if I could find the file but no luck. If anybody has info that would be amazing. Thanks for your time and anything helps.

      I am currently doing a ring, piston, hone rebuild on a K 321 off a Ford LGT 145 Tractor  on this machine they actually welded the rails to the bottom pan (see pics). My intention here is to put this puppy in a red machine (312-8 or GT14). I definitely have the small pan with the expanded bottom for the long dipper.
      Here's my questions:
      > Can I carefully remove the rails from the pan, cutoff the old front axle mounting bracket(s) and then drill holes in  the flanges to mount  to the Wheel Horse rails.
      > Since the engine is side mounted will the expanded bottom fit between the standard Wheel Horse rails?
      > If not possible to make this old pan work what flat pan would work and do I need to get the expanded bottom one (big dipper}
      > any recommendations here would be appreciated don't want to go down to many blind holes here...….

      Saw a gt14 for a really good price on Craigslist yesterday went and looked at it last evening, ended up buying it . It’s a 68 or 69 gt14 but I’m not exactly sure which. It’s in decent condition and seems to be complete. It has a really nice complete three point hitch and a really nice three point tiller. I didn’t think the seat and muffler were original but I looked at a manual and it turns out they are. I’m gonna try to get it running for the big show but if I don’t I will still take it. The best part is I bought it from a super nice guy that knows a lot about wheel horses. Some of you might know him, his name is Less, sorry didn’t catch his last name. He has been going to the wheel horse show since the beginning and personally knew Cecil and Betty Pond. He used to have 74 tractors but he narrowed it down to his favorite three. Overall it was a really good day. I got to meet a really nice guy, get another tractor and hear some good stories. Here are a few pictures of the gt14 and tiller. I am gonna start working on it this Sunday.
