Redisbest 22 #1 Posted December 22, 2016 Do any of you red fans know of a replacement gas spring (for clutch belt tensioner)....Parts tree wants an audacious $ 95.00....Is there. A cheaper source.....I rigged up a spring in the meantime to keep from having to hold it back with my toes !..... Thanks
Dirtdog524 61 #2 Posted December 23, 2016 That gas strut is expensive to buy. It was put on the newer tractors to stop from doing a "wheely" if you would let the clutch out too quickly. Wheel horse used to use a spring from the back of transmission to the clutch linkage. The part number is 108035.I think i paid about 7.00 dollars for one at my local Wheel Horse dealer. The only downfall to this is that you better be careful when letting out the clutch.
Redisbest 22 #3 Posted December 23, 2016 I looked for a hole in the linkage to put a spring...And couldn't find where to hook one....
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,104 #4 Posted December 23, 2016 Left and right is always from the operator's position in the seat. The spring goes on the left side of the transmission. Small hole in the lever behind the pedal Small hole in the cast web above the left axle housing. Finding the holes in illustrations is almost as hard as finding them on the tractor. The first damper used was simply an air shock with a small hole in the end. Air movement was restricted by the hole and dirt would plug them up. Removing them for a thorough cleaning restored their effectiveness. A couple of designs followed that used a high pressure shock and when they fail they are done. Notfishin 64 #5 Posted December 23, 2016 did mine two months ago , works great . i just left the shock on there and added spring on passenger side as this shows
ohiofarmer 3,276 #6 Posted December 23, 2016 (edited) I have one with a spring [520] and a 400 series with a shock. the spring will wear out the bushings on one side of the tunnel over time. [Oiling the bushings could not hurt and do not forget to check yours for damage]. Then it is also prone to the spring breaking. Over time, the spring wallowed out an elliptical hole in the tunnel housing that was very difficult to fix. The point of all this is that I found that a strip of rubber cut from a motorcycle tube is perfect for the application and cuts way down on vibration as compared to a metal spring. I just wired the tube to the eccentric tension arm and the frame Perhaps excessive vibration is the reason the engineers went to the shock thingy in the first place. My apologies if my repair does not quite fit your application, but it does work a treat on the hydro transmissions Edited December 23, 2016 by ohiofarmer
